Saying Graham has his head screwed on straight is going a little far  especially if you were on the last run with him at Danville  , however, he does have respect for the potential of his car.

Very true! I have never been denied a well earned pass from another low HP car. I have however spent 3 entire laps behind a C5 at VIR-F. Yeah I know, I should have pulled into the pits and asked for space. The other option would have been for his instructor to say "that guy has been in your mirror for 3 laps, let him pass!".

I had to let go of my ego at VIR-F last year when I had to point by a Jetta on the back straight. That car (and driver) was just too fast through the corners for my big Mustang F-150 to keep behind for long.

Egos can be a bad thing. I think that some, if not most, of the accidents that have taken place at HPDEs around the country this year can be attributed to inflated egos.

Yep this stuff is dangerous. Perhaps I've missed something, but I haven't really heard of any really serious injuries or deaths at TRUE driving schools. A few corner workers have left us this year...while working actual races. Then there were the rally incidents last year that essentially forced the SCCA to end that program. And of course the infamous Porsche GT crash at that very very loosely controled open track day. I have heard rumors and legends about a supercharged Mustank with stock brakes at Summit Pt 4-5 years ago leaving the front straight at 135mph resulting in a death, but I cannot confirm or deny it.

One day early in my track career, Viper Days came to VIR. Several of us took a day off of work to go up Friday for the open track. $150, all damn day on track. Some of us still refer to that as "Thee Best Day Ever", but I digress. Anywho, at the drivers meeting the event chair said something like "We prefer you pass on the straights, and we'd like to see a passing signal..." Fun it was. Smart it probably was not.

Still at the end of the day, I feel safer driving on the track than I do driving to the track. Yep, this stuff is dangerous, but I'm fairly sure there are more deaths each year caused by people tipping vending machines over than at driving schools.

That's all for me. I'm off to Walmart to get a 5 quart jug of Mobil One's finest 5W30 so I can change the oil for VIR next weekend....

Just as a follow up and I am not trying to start an argument with Mark V. and Ron S. who more years track expereince combined than anyone I know, but I sent and e-mail to Mark Atkins, who works control for NASA and VIR, in fact I belive he worked control when THSCC was at full and patroit courses. I asked him about VIR Corner worker training and this is what he responded with.

Quote:
Vir flaggers have had a basic fire fighting training but not really anything on extraction. Also, 98% of the time they are on station alone and are told not to leave the station until all cars are stopped or the last car goes by. As with aything, it also depends on who is on the corner too...some are more physically capable and/or willing to get in the middle of something like that than others

I then asked him about any first aid training and what corner workers had at their station he responded with this.

Quote:
The only thing we have on station is a fire bottle and a broom. No first aid kits. We are not trained in first aid and VIR would definitely NOT want us to try to administer first aid. That's EV's responsibility to get there quickly and take care of that.

This goes more in line with what I was saying and how what NASA-VA expects from corner workers who work with us, we don't require trained first responders to work corners, but expect them to be able to handel any sitution that arise calmly and quicky and to be able to effectivly communicate the situation to control so the corrent people can be dispatched. At most tracks we have EV situtaion at start and mid way around the track, so they can respond quickly to a situtation anywhere on the track.

The Main point that everyone is trying to make, is not to run on track with a group that does not have a saftey plan and people to excute that plan, I have not heard of too many track days on the east coast that are run with out corner workers or ev, and we seemed to have several very good groups running track events, I would have not trouble doing THSCC, CAR Guys, Mazda club and NASA-MA events as I konw they all put on safe anf fun events.[/quote]
