What is club policy on this, for track events?

There is a kid I am helping get started who wants to do a few schools before getting his SCCA license. He has raced karts and stuff like that, but is just now (turned 16) getting into racing cars.

His parents are supportive, and will sign waivers and come to events with him. Is he allowed to run in our schools?

Thanks,

Bowie Jr.

In the past Bill Koff's son ran with us prior to his 18th birthday. I believe the policy is that they must have a valid driver's license and some parental consent forms must be signed.

Mark can give you the definitive answer.

Mark let my son Matt drive with us prior to 18 yo. He had been autocrossing for 2 years and had "proven himself"during that time. I understand it's an individual decision thing, based on experience, not a hard and fast rule.

To be honest, with his experience, your friend could go to SCCA driving school and get his Novice license. It would be difficult to say no to a licensed racer. Know any orange ITA Miatas he could use?

I am not likely to let him drive my car. There is a very short list of people who I trust that much, and he is not on it, at least not yet. Besides, I have like $30,000 in that damn car; if this kid got in it and was faster than me I would probably have to kill him.

I have only known this kid for a very short while, and while he seems to have his head screwed on straight, I am being cautious.

What he really wants is a place to drive the car while prepping it, to work out the bugs and get it ready to do an SCCA school next spring.

Bowie:

According to K&K Minors can drive at our track events as long as they:
1) have a full valid State Drivers licance (not a learners permit)
2) at least one parent is present during the duration of the event
3) and signs the minor insurance release form.

We can't stop you from renting your car for the weekend but we
don't drive student cars.

Thanks for your reply Mark.

I am not sure where the last bit came from, however, as I have NEVER driven a student's car at any track event I have ever instructed at ever, and frankly never will. I am not interested in buying someone else a car.
