My "track tire" list:

Bridgestone RE-71: Bought new in March '00, still plenty of life left.
Kumho Ecsta V700: Bought used summer '03, tires were new in Winter/spring '01/02, plenty of life left.
Kumho Victoracers: Bought used summer '04, build date of sometime in '00, plenty of life left.

Maybe if I got on track more often I'd kill off some of these tires and find out what new ones are like?

On the other hand, I have 3 sets of "track" tires that have cost me under $400 total investment (excluding mounting and balancing). $200 of that was for the RE-71s!

Yes, that seems to be the case, unfortunately.

Well, new engines are more fun then new tires anyway!

I always thought that street tires got better the more worn down they were. To this day I hold that the old Yokohama AVS Intermediate, at "it won't pass state inspection" tread depth, was a stinking fast tire on track.

Me, I have a vague recollection of what new Hoosiers feel like on track. Expensive bliss.
