Someone needs to work on their divebomb skills.

Yes, they're good all the way to the point they lose that great traction. The ZII's (plus the cheese grater pavement of CMP) are not compatible with the way I've been taught to drive the Duff car. And as it's pretty much the only thing I've driven on track for ~3yrs, it's hard to turn that off. (If I drive it like the bug, I don't kill the tires, but I'm 10s/lap slower.) The whole "get on power early" doesn't work on ZII's.

Looking at SOB...
I'm not sure how they keep tires on that roll-cage-with-wheels. It might have something to do with wider tires and a much lighter chassis. (and their inventive "rear wheel steering" modification.) For Chump @ VIR, the ZII's would likely work perfectly (perfect pavement, and zero need to push) but I'd like to see how other tires handle. The R-S3 and "new" R1R are the top of my list. (of course, DZ102 is on that list too [460tw] :-) They worked well on the bug, for 4 hours, at an HPDE; I don't know about 24hrs.) Buy a set of both and try 'em at CMP in June. (there's always some miata looking for tires if they don't work for us...)

I drove with the SOB guys last fall. The car is super light (under 2,000 lbs) handles well, has good power (Mike tells me 135whp), but the biggest advantage is MPG. They have made it 3.5 hours on a tank, and they don't have a fuel cell!

Just looked at the sheets from LeMons for Saturday. We were the highest finishing penalty lap assessed car at 18th place. We would have been in 8th without the laps.

Looking at Sunday, we still finished higher than all of the teams receiving penalty laps. We ran the same number of laps as The Duff Car.

As for tire wear.................. we ate up six Star Specs also. The lateral grip is nice to have but it chews them up.

It's a 1.8T, right? (minus the T?) My bug did 15mpg at VIR when it wasn't using the turbo (MAF failed), and it's 3000lbs.

We used about half the set of ZII's and then took them off at the break Sunday. (before I drove, because I hate them.)

All wrong, 3 cars entered the turn, 3 cars exited on the track, no one locked a tire and you actually gained positions.

This is what you should be striving for. http://youtu.be/rqMOfEhETj4

That reminds me, I should post a writeup of the NASA weekend as well.

I've never seen those tires...

Notice how the are band new, too. And people wonder why VIR is so expensive. (they're new even out on patriot course, and they didn't bother repaving that)

(CMP... those are some well loved old truck tires. Even at Charlotte, they're old race slicks.)

That's the one! I'm sure Mitch will admit that wasn't exactly a smart move and if the Grim Reaper wasn't on their game there would have been contact.

I told Mark to thank his son for avoiding me and apologized for almost taking them out. Definitely the poorest move of the race on my part.

Robert and I both thought that the ZII Star Specs were pretty good. They have a lot more grip than the RE-11A's that we'd been using before. I could be flat from T8 through the kink and not have to track out for T10 with no drama at all, which is not usually the case.

The thing that I did notice was that if you scrub them, then they lose traction and deteriorate quickly. You could see where they were disintegrating when we pitted. I had to change my carousel significantly and be a lot smoother in general, as opposed to tossing the car into a turn sideways and jamming the go-pedal, which I probably shouldn't have been doing anyway, but it was fun and it worked.

Looking at SOB and at two of the winning cars, all of which were on the ZII's, theirs were smooth and looked fine, which tells me that you can successfully drive fast on them for a long time.

Our next race is in August, and I'll be on the other side of the planet, so Ricky will probably pick the tires and prep the car. I wouldn't mind seeing how the Ventus R-S3 does at a race.

Like you, I guess my driving style doesn't work with ZIIs. Anyone that has been behind me knows that I drive with a lot of slip angle.

2:01.08, not bad. My best was 2:00.09, but I hear new tires are faster than old ones, even in a car with 75+HP less.

I was looking back at my HPDE video from 18 months ago. I ran a 2:00.52 in the Mazda! That really surprised me - it felt quicker in the 580SX. The Mazda was slower on the straights, but much more grip in the corners.

I was with Shark Bait at CMP. Finished low, low, low... 60th with a noise penalty, tire problems and loose nuts behind the steering wheel. i.e. drivers er... I mean alleged drivers. But fun just the same.

Really? I didn't know they did that, but I'd like to see a lot more of those. The VW Bug and Astro-Turf car come to mind as well as a few others. Have you ever heard an RX-7 with just a single glass-pak? It makes my ears bleed! The reason ours meets the rules is we got tired of listening to our own car (old Prelude) so have a street legal (sans cat) exhaust on ours.

Duff has a "fart can" on it, so it makes that distinct honda note. Having run it open-header, it can be MUCH louder.
