has anyone ever seen someone try and use this insurance? I know some insurance companies specialize in not paying out and would hate to spend that kind of cash on something just to be told they will not pay out because of some excuse they make.

I'm sure that if you use one of the providers advertised by BMW CCA or MotorsportReg you will be fine.

Insurance companies don't make money by paying out claims. How do think Cline paid for his new toy?

Lockton's website says essentially if you have filed a claim on their insurance in the past 3 years you can't be covered. So, it's kind of a one shot deal I guess, also the deductible is either 10 or 15%, so unless you nearly total a car most damage sustained in a HPDE is likely going to be under the deductible and your better off paying out of pocket.

Also, it only covers physical damage, so if you blow up a $10k motor on the track missing a shift, that's on you also.

It is not difficult to total a car, Just have it hit in the right spot on the car and it's totaled. Especially with today's cars and the use of composites and bonding agents. I've seen a number of cars totaled at hpde's.

Especially if you pop the airbags, thats a pretty easy 10K bill right there.

Very true. I am having a discussion with my self as to if I want to take my new purchase on the track. While it is a 13 year old car it's a lot of money to me and it would be easy to do several thousand dollars just in cosmetics. Where as my track mini is not going to pop any airbags, has a roll cage, and I'm not to worried about a crinkle or two. I think I'm a better driver the cheaper the car. I am the most comfortable in a Lemons/Chump car.

Why do you think me and Olivier are sharing the Miata on track and not the Porsche.

I'm considering this as well, as $179 for peace of mind doesn't seem that bad, tbh... Of course, I think I tend drive a little more aggressively than Chad, so maybe there's that to consider.

If an accident were occur, but the deductible wasn't met, then you're out that money +$179. In the face of 2k, what's another $179? Other than ~9% on top of it... Plus, if it's under the deductible, then you don't have to make a claim, and you can use it again!

I think I'll end up getting track insurance for the next HPDE - especially given that it's not just a single session around the track like the NASA hyperdrive was.

I would make my decision on buying insurance based on how your car drives not handles. When I was tracking a MazdaSpeed 3, I did a lot of what in hindsight I would call stupid moves. Mostly just jerking the steering wheel. The car always forgave me with little drama and dancing it around felt cool instead of deadly. I have since switched to a C5 Z06. The first two events were spent going all of the way back to basics, steer smooth, brake smooth, and the accelerator is to be treated gently. If your Camaro is anything like the Vette and you're driving in Green group, I would get insurance. With the Corvette, you don't gently approach the limits of the car , you can smash through them. In a front wheel drive car, you can always get out of a mess by applying lots of gas to pull you out. In a Corvette you walk the tight rope, you lift too fast, you spin or if you give it to much gas to recover, you slide off of the road or spin. I have had good instructors and I do appreciate the risks that they take. I also have insurance on the Vette. I don't know about you, but from years of autox, I have good recovery skills. As Patrice implied, you can learn more and take less risk by driving a slow car fast.

I think you've sold me on the track insurance, Michael - in the single session/Hyperdrive that I participated in, I struggled with providing smooth inputs to the car, and while it didn't end in disaster, I think that it inevitably might if I can't get it under control (which I'm sure I will be able to -- was just my first time tracking ever.) Got yelled at for it several times by the instructor, and eventually cleaned it up, but I've still got a long ways to go.
