So I didn't want to post this until after THSCC was wrapped up at CMP. This was with NASA a few weeks ago. I was being cheap and running the remnants of some old autocross A6 tires in the rear so I could mount a brand new set of R888 Toyos. Well that didn't work out well. This was the out lap and I was just starting to add speed towards the end of the lap. I took the kink at 120 MPH and I think I hit the wall right around that speed. After hitting the curbing the rear tires stuck because they were up to temp, the front didn't and the car just hooked. I was a passenger from the first instant it started to come around. Good news is that I already tore the car apart and it is all cosmetic damage (almost every panel though) and I will have the car back together soon.

Enjoy the entertainment and please do not try to save money and run mismatched tires.

120 MPH on the OUT LAP? I don't know what to say about that besides you're lucky only the car was hurt.

It was a pretty hard hit. I was pretty sore for a few days.

It was a pretty cool crash.

Do you have your garage finished to work on it?

But, he didn't have new tires....

Sadly the garage project got sidelined by an HOA that thought that a steel building was not OK. I may just put up a stick build in the next few years but it will be smaller, like 25x25

Oof, sorry to hear about the car but I'm happy to hear you're ok.

I'm sorry to hear that the twin took a hit, but I'm glad to hear that you're ok. What I learned at CMP was that you have to be on the gas when you hit the kink and just hold on. I'll be glad when both of you get back to the track.

Indeed. But your "on the gas" is very different from ours. (In the Duff car, at that speed -- 90ish -- the gas the peddle really doesn't do much.) I flew off there in a Friday test session pre-lemons, going faster and faster to find the limit. (~100, btw, and it'll scare the ever loving crap out of you.) Roger went off there in race last year, except he was sliding dangerously sideways -- Judge Phil was not amused. The solo shows we both wuss at about 90.

If you have the spare cash, an Aim Solo would be a good buy. No cellphone has the speed or GPS detail to really help -- esp. at 120mph. It will never lie to you. (esp. if it's been calibrated in the car.) Note: Apex will apply the club 10% discount!

Glad you are ok! That would be a good video to share in the classroom setting showing that things like this can happen very easily!

Paul in the "Bumble Bee" Civic did something similar at the last LeMons. ('tho he went too wide)

http://youtu.be/6SQjHC2w6K0

He also did everything you shouldn't... don't hang your head in shame; do your "team america" signal to the corner works so they know you're alive. I was a bit surprised they didn't red flag us to get the rescue crew out there -- I saw the ambulance lights as I cleared T9, and then the yellow Civic with tires in the grill after T14. He was perfectly fine. They had the #5 marker back up in a few laps. Rebuilding the wall took several laps. (~20min?)

Not a bad video for class at all. It shows how much car prep comes into play as well as how fast this can happen.

Glad I'm not the only one. Cool to see it from different angle too. They had the ambulance and tow truck getting ready but I drove mine in to the paddock under its own power as soon as the traffic cleared. I got a standing ovation from spectator's hill once I drove in since they felt the crash looked pretty spectacular from their vantage.
