Blue = 6' of new pavement

So paved paddock and a bunch more track in a lot of areas. Judging from where the blue is, it's going to change up entries/exits and should be measurably faster.

I'm kind of torn on the paddock being paved. On one hand it'll be nice for everything to not get filthy after an event, but man does blacktop get hot.

Not me. I hate that damn sand that gets on and in everything. As for widening the track, I don't really see the need for that personally.

I'm fairly sure the widening is to attract more racing series.

I'm not fairly sure, I'm positive

I agree that paving the paddock has good and bad aspects. I've now had two tire punctures on track at VIR so I'm hoping the paved paddock helps that situation - I've always assumed that the tires picked up something in the paddock that caused the punctures. I'm not looking forward to the extra heat that will be generated.

Widening the track is surely a concession to racing. Wide corners, especially in turn 1 and 2 seem to be in vogue (i.e. COTA) as way of minimizing the carnage at the start/restart of a race.

But the real concern - I wonder how (much) the extra investment will effect track rental rates?

See VK, VIR had to charge so much for years and years just to lead up to this map

COTA's whole MO has been to ignore the amateur club scene. I have to admit it was a pretty good scam and that the track looks amazing.

It's cute you think that we are actually done paying for it.

Oh I don't, not by a long shot. I think that's what they had to do for Grand Am/ALMS to come in 2014 and beyond

The track has other problems that will likely be solved at at the same time. The grading is poor in areas and drainage is bad. I think we will mostly notice it as more run off room. But real cars shouldn't have as many issues with undercarriage damage and getting high centered on the tracks hard edges.

I think the wider surface will be safer and provide more passing. Right now the track can limit passing or their is nowhere to go if someone screws up.

I won't know how I feel about the change until I get to drive the new track. I had heard rumor that if they paved the paddock, they were not going to run electrical hook-ups for campers and trailers, not sure if that was true or not.

In before VK...

Electrical hookups for campers/etc are an income source for VIR. They generally like as many income sources as they can get. I doubt they would get rid of their existing paddock electrical infrastructure.
