My second ever track day was a comp school. You either have it or you race chumpcar and ride around. If you want to race, go race nobody will stop you. I think you will have more fun on a modest budget running hpde and learning all the tracks beforehand.
FWIW spec e30s are affordable if you focus on maintenance and performance. They are expensive if you get caught up with frills and expenses that don't matter. Fresh shocks and rubber are all you need. A fresh motor and trans to win.
