Hi All,
Any recommendation on fire extinguishers. I'm thinking of going with a Halon or Halatron from Stable Energies. They have a dual strap metal bracket that I would use and attach to the roll bar with metal hose straps.

How about the kind you can get at Home Depot? They are much cheaper. I heard they can make a mess if you ever have to use them. Anyone have to put out a car fire?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

What ever extinguisher you get, make sure it is Underwriters Labs (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM) Listed/certified/approved. Some of the halon units aren't actually Listed/certified/approved. Here is one link with lots of information: http://www.hanford.gov/fire/safety/extingrs.htm

Edited to add: I would not buy one mail order. You need to actually see the Listing mark on the product. Some manufacturers will mention "UL rating" or similar wording. That does not mean their product is actually Listed.

Mark,

Since I used to be employed (by UL) as a Product Safety Engineer, I figure I should do some additional research on the fire extinguisher question. So, here is some more info:

Portable Halon extinguishers apparently are no longer Listed (Ozone depletion issues). It appears that the replacement if you don't want the normal dry chemical type is called "clean agent". Here is a link from one of the major manufacturers that gives some information:

Here is a link to their dry chemical and their CO2 portable units.

I suspect that a Listed Clean Agent portable extinguisher will be pricey. For normal car use, dry chemical from Home Depot, etc. is common. CO2 extinguishers may be available and less pricey than clean agent.
