One thing that will come along with more experience is you learn that brakes are not the only way to bleed off speed, and sometimes you want to use that extra momentum to do things like help rotate the car.

Heh, like scrubbing. Roger's "asked" me stop that; he doesn't like me eating the insides off the star specs. After Chump and this weekend, I think I've broken myself of that bad habit. *knock on wood*

The line between rotate and spin is very thin, esp. when your instinct is to lift. 'tho, I've gotten better about that. No spins this weekend. (which I think is a first.) One off (and yes, I have wifilapper data for that session), but no spin.

Awesome evert! Thanks sooo much to those that work sooo hard not only to make it happen, but to make it run so smoothly.

I credit my first spin at VIR to Les. He had been pointing me by all weekend, then in the last session on Sunday, he shows up on my rear bumper.

I've been told in class and by in-car instructors: "At the top of the esses, get your braking done between 9 & 10, as you turn into 10 get on the gas and STAY on the gas to the exit. If you lift in 10 you will spin and be headed for the left side wall."

Oh - you mean like this?

Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this weekend’s HPDE so much fun. Les, I will be changing to more rumble next year and it’s yellow too. Going from green to yellow was a big change for me. The MazdaSpeed spent a lot of time pegged. My new MPG rating is 8. I discovered that you can never have enough brakes. Braking was my biggest problem. Maybe it just shook me up more because the overall speed of yellow is so much higher than green . My instructor was pushing me to brake later and later. Her most repeated quote was “ Mike, you’re coasting again. “ There were a bunch of little things that I learned that I had to concentrate on constantly. Great weekend.

hard braking at high speed is your friend not your enemy, it converts kinetic energy to heat when there's more airflow to dissipate it. most novice drivers don't brake hard enough initially and have to add braking force towards the end of the braking zone which is the opposite of what you should be doing.

I can tell you that hard braking late and hard in the MazdaSpeed 3 with HP+ pads does not give me a comfortable feelilng. I think that it's time to graduate to a more aggressive brake pad. Should I put better pads all around or would doing just the fronts be sufficient? On hard braking on a front wheel drive car, the rears are doing very little. Advice is appreciated.

front is just fine. I was running hawk dtc-60 up front and hps in the rear. I think they were wearing out at the same rate. There just isn't much weight on the rear under braking.

Proper track pads are night and day when compared to HP+s. I also finally burned through my first set of HT-10s. ~12 weekends on them. Oh how I love being 2400lbs wet w/driver.

Trust me, I know how lucky I was. I had told my instructor on the prior lap I thought I could carry a bit more speed cuz I was leaving lots of room at track out. I intended to make a small change, but when I compared the telemetry I had carried almost 10mph more and only tapped the brake after 9. When I turned in and got back on the gas I realized I was not gonna hit the apex and would run out of road at track out. So my natural reaction was to lift, but I should've just stayed on the gas and taken it to the right. Lesson learned.

NOBODY drives better looking behind them. Driving the mirror almost always causes mistakes.

Most people that spin in T10 have the same cause and effect. You were extremely lucky, and I will bet you won't make the same mistake again. I spun once in T10 myself (turning while still under braking) the same way and was also lucky with no contact. I sure I will make another mistake, but it won't be THAT mistake in THAT turn!

I had a yellow student so I wasn't out there with you, but Les said you were pretty much owning the green group out there. Good job man. I hope you can make it down to CMP with us next month.

Some of us definitely got some practice working traffic. Here's just one lap on Saturday.

I think a bunch went home after Saturday - the crowd seemed a lot thinner on Sunday.

Sorry bout that Cash, didn't me to scare you. I promise I was several car lengths back when you spun. I didn't really take my skirt off this weekend until the last couple sessions when I decided I was tired of this point by shit. What lap times did you tell me you were running?
