First, I wasn't there, but I know most of these quys. Second, please read these threads all the way through. The "SCCA banned them already" rumor turns out to be unsubstantiated, but someone has called SCCA to find out the official position. For those of you that already have these for track events, please watch them for issues. That is my only reason for posting this. TireRack doesn't seem to have them on their website anymore for purchace.

I personally saw all of the tires in question the tread would get a horizontal line and then would start to lift off the inner liner. Apparently Kuhmo will be issuing a recall on the new 710's which is good, but this is also a bad start for Kuhmo, the new tires appear to be every bit as fast as the Hoosiers, but if they won't hold up that ain't gonna help.

Considering the amount of track testing that Scotty B. White was bragging about the results from on Corvettes (presumeably from a different manufacturing batch), the design may be fine. Considering the length of the Kumho pipeline and the number of tires they will need to supply to keep customers happy, I wonder if they will be back this year for autocrossers?

Here is the recall: http://www.kumhousa.com/V710.asp

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ECSTA V710 TIRES

KUMHO Tire's priority is safety, and we are committed to supplying our customers with the highest quality and best performing tires that are available anywhere in the world. It is with this philosophy in mind that KUMHO is taking immediate action in discontinuing the sale of the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire.

The V710 has won several races and set numerous track records since it was introduced into the market on January 1, 2004. Although we have not experienced any air loss failures with the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire, we have discovered some inconsistent test results relating to tread splice and tread area durability.

The sale of the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire will, therefore, be discontinued immediately, and tires in use in the market will be collected from consumers. KUMHO will replace them with either the KUMHO ECSTA V700 or Victoracer tire free of charge.

An investigation into the cause of the inconsistencies has been carried out and modifications to the product and production methods have been made to ensure these inconsistencies do not re-occur.

Consumers who have purchased the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire must call the dealer where the tires were purchased or the following toll free number to arrange for tire return and replacement :

1-800-445-8646 Extension 342

Consumers will be given the choice of a free replacement of the ECSTA V710 with either the ECSTA V700 or Victoracer. They will also be provided a free set of the modified ECSTA V710 upon its arrival.

KUMHO is sincerely committed to the quality of our products and the total satisfaction of our customers. We regret any inconvenience to our customers.

Sigh...even if they fix the 710 they still don't make many sizes. Nothing 14" or smaller at all from what I understand. And the magic size for 15" wheeled IT cars, 225-45-15, isn't available.

Guess I'll keep buying takeoff Hoosiers until I hit the lotto...

Well the chatter on the Corvette Forum got a little ugly from one of the hardcore Solo I guys. Scotty jumped in defending Kumho. Here is his comments on the tire and Kumho:

Hey guys,
just a couple notes here to help get you pointed in the right direction.

Please note that there have been "No air loss failures" of the 710 at all. The issue with tread delamination (peeling) on road course (read hi speed) cars from that "I" am aware of was brought on due to overinflation (like almost 60psi). The 710 likes pressurs under 40psi and the failures I am aware of were all with tires run with well over 45psi in them when the tread peeled. It also gave the drivers plenty of warning. People tend not to realize how hot these tires get and people used to running in the 180* range and gaining maybe 8,b from cold pressures tend to get a wake up call when pressures climb over 14lb due to hi moisture content inflation air and the hi temps these tires are comfortable at (like 250*)

Never the less KUMHO Tire steps up and takes care of their customers!

Dave Roush, Phil Croyle and the entire NayKid Racing team have run these tires extensively at very high speeds and even into winning a race and setting a new track record on the 7th heatcycle wth no sign of a problem whatsoever!

That being said I couldn't be more proud to be associated with KUMHO Tire!

I personally was responsible for requesting the 315/35x18 rear tire and it has obviously worked well for the car we had in mind when requesting that size

When you do get back on the 710 try running the (for you ss guys) rears at around 26 to 28 hot and the fronts at 31-32 hot

Until then you will find the 305/30x18 ECSTA to be a very nice rear tire and the 275/40x17 VICTORACER to work very well in front. This is a very good combo and will prove to be quite fast for an SS car. Just remember to put a bit more toe in the rear that you took out to run the 710 and you will be golden!

The ECSTA has excellent forward bite characteristics and the VICTORACER will turn the car very well

I couldn't be more impressed with the way KUMHO Tire has stepped up to take care of it's cutomers, WAY TO GO KUMHO!

DISCLAIMER: I am not now and never have been an employee or spokesman for KUMHO Tire, I am a racer who races on KUMHO Tires (since 1996)
