Clint, a well known and very active local Triangle area ol Corps SCCA & IMSA Road Rac'r from 'back in the day'. Following is his obit and info about a Memorial BBQ get together to celebrate his life to be held in Durham this coming Sat June 25th from 4-7 pm.
Those of you who've been around these parts for a few decades may have known Clint, or knew of him, as one of the many early Triangle area road racing enthusiasts who formed what was then a real 'hot bed' of road racers smack dab in the middle of NASCAR country. An eclectic bunch to say the least. It was the era of Team Highball, Miller & Norburn, The Raleigh Rac'n Mafia, and others who formed a large contingent of SCCA competitors. Many of these folks also raced in the early years of IMSA and for the first few races made up a large majority of the entrants helping John Bishop get his dream off the ground. Clint was right in the thick of it.
Of course the home track for this group of NC and VA racers was VIR. Most of you know, or if not can find out, the history of VIR online where much information is available.
One event in particular included in the listings is the first ever IMSA GT Series race and in conjunction with it was the real starting point for the very successful Radial Sedan Series [ aka 'Baby Grand' ], run there in April 1971.
Clint, co-driving with Byron Morris won the RS Series B Class in this race driving a BMW. You can find all the details about this event including results, etc at:

Clinton Adair Abernethy
DURHAM -- Clinton Adair Abernethy, 64, past away unexpectedly Tuesday June 14, 2011.
Mr. Abernethy, the son of Clinton and Gladys Abernethy, was born in Durham on March 18, 1947.
In his early years of life, he was warmly welcomed into the home of his Uncle and Aunt's family, Everett and Dora Abernethy. Throughout his life, he affectionately referred to his Aunt as "Momma", his uncle as "Poppa" and his cousin Jan, as "Sister." Although, never formally adopted, he was known to everyone as their son.
He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1970 with Masters Degrees in both Political Science and Economics. He began his professional career with North Carolina Legislation in fiscal research and the reorganization of State Government.
He went on to serve under three Governors as Assistant Secretary of Natural Resources and later as Assistant Secretary of Commerce. After leaving his post with the Commerce Department, he engaged in a successful career fostering and developing international business relations. As an enjoyable hobby, in recent years he could be found providing in home computer service.
He was an avid motor sports fan and enthusiast, winning a multitude of races and National Titles with his life long friend, Byron Morris. Along with his other accomplished racing friends, he continues to be recognized as an early trendsetter in American Sports Car Racing. Even at his age, he and his racing buddies were still trying to be competitive at Kart racing at V.I.R. He also had a love of sailing, spending many long weekends sailing with friends and engaging in competitive sailing along the coast.
Clint is survived by his former wife, Barbara P. Abernethy; his sister, Jan A. Howard (Larry); his nephews, Jonathan Jones, Kelly Jones (Dana); and niece, Jill Yancey (Edwin), and their four children, Samantha, Ely, Jax, and Maddy. His immediate cousins are Edgar L. Little (Faye) Vickie Terrell (Ernie), Tucker Crawford (Bobby) Gary Abernethy (Scottie) and Donna Fleming (Howard).
There will be an informal memorial gathering for all his family and friends at his sister's home, 3003 Harriman Road, Durham, on Saturday, June 25, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Hello Everyone, If you are receiving this ..your name was in Clint's
address book. It is with great shock and grief that I advise you of
Clint's death via massive heart attack Tuesday am. Please feel free to quit
reading if you do not know Clint well enough to continue. He had lots of
new friends I had yet to meet so I know many of you only by first names in
our conversations.
For those of you who don't know, there is a gathering Saturday afternoon
from 4-7 ( or until) in Durham. We chose his sister's house (Jan and Larry
Howard ) to do this for convenience and because most all family and holdiay
gatherings have been there. The dress is very casual. His cousin is
cooking a pig, etc. so come prepared to eat, drink , and have a good time.
We'll be outdoors and indoors. The address is 3003 Harriman Rd. House
phone is 919 489 2854 Take Cornwallis exit off 15-501 between Durham and
Chapel Hill. It is between Moreern/Duke University West exits and Pickett
Rd. Go west away from town. Up and down hill a couple of times to the
blinking light indicating fire dept ahead. At blinking light, turn left on
Ridge Road. Around a few curves, take second road to Rt. .... Harriman
Avenue. Two blocks down --- at the corner on the left . ..large house on
hill. Park anywhere you can find. Come up the driveway. You'll either
see or hear us. There may be 50 people, there may be 200. We're asking
people to not change plans to come --Clint would not want that. But you
may get to see people you haven't seen in years.

The following is a distribution list of racers from all over the country who were regulars in the RS Series that Clint was so heavily involved in. It's from Brian Walsh, son of Jerry 'Racer' Walsh who campaigned a Pinto throughout the RS Series and has been the driving force behind the Annual IMSA RS / SCCA 2.5 Challenge Reunion Races for the past several years, the first three or so being held at VIR in conjunction with Historic and Vintage Car races. These being the last chance I had to visit with Clint and others who were able to make it.
I'm listing them as some of the possible guests who may be able to make it to the Memorial. Obviously many are from far off and unlikely to, but with no way to know I've included the entire list as Brian provided it. Perhaps there's someone included therein that you're acquainted with and might run into if you're able to attend the event for Clint.
