Why don't they last? My father has three of them. He is an ASE BMW, Porsche and Mercedes mechanic. As well as a diesel mechanic, he thinks making on last 24hrs is easily doable.
By the way, thanks for oh guys that have been there and done that let me think out loud. Thinking I need to find what teams on here are doing the VIR race and hang out/help in the pits to get a good feel and idea of what its all about.
If your dad thinks so, then go for it- just make sure he understands he'll need to come along as crew chief for you.
924's are cool looking cars, but they don't have a stellar reputation when it comes to reliability.
For Lemons or Chump, you want something reliable. If you start out with a car with a reliable reputation, you're a few steps ahead of the masochists who start out with complete POS cars that could barely make it off the assembly line without parts falling off. Lemons seems to reward or at least appreciate those who bring POS oddball cars and manage to turn laps. If that's your thing, then I can see it being a bonding experience, but you need to make sure everyone on your team knows what the basic game plan is, or you risk mutiny.
Both series are still in the "budget" racing category compared to other series, but there is a large investment required to pull it off, and to try to make sure everyone gets seat time and you don't end up working on the car more time than it spends on track. Crew members will tend to get pissed/discouraged if they pay their money, then the car gets wrecked/blows up etc during the first hour of the race and they're SOL. Sure, it happens, but you need to try to do as much as you can to eliminate the likelihood.
I strongly suggest you go to a race as a spectator/crew member before you start building a car.
