we had thirty cars in class this past weekend, an all time spec e30 record. on sat i qualified third and finished second after the pole sitter (evan) was taken out by a bonehead competitor who decided not to brake for turn 11. i even had the fastest lap of the race (a new personal best of 1:51.8 ). video in progress.

the ifu was that afternoon, unfortunately it didn't start with an inverted field so the first few laps were kinda boring. after that it got REAL interesting.

sunday's race started out similar to sat, the top three qualifying spots were identical. this time evan stayed in the race and travis wilson passed me at the start. the four of us lapped together until a long FCY stopped the action. afterwards traffic was an issue but i held on to fourth. later i learned that mike skeen was piloting travis's car :)

second and fourth in the largest spec e30 field ever, fast lap of the race, and zero damage or mechanical issues with the car all weekend. hard to ask for much more than that from a race weekend!

Good seeing you down there Jason. You drove great. The start of the IFU was a little boring. I grabbed a shower and came out to watch the last half :-)

You need to distinguish your car more from Evan's so I can pick you out.

i completely agree, the first segment of the ifu was boring. they gridded us using the finishing position of the previous race, i have a feeling it was supposed to be inverted but for some reason that didn't happen.

you're thinking of jay marks, his car and evan's are the twins (bmw laguna blue). mine is refrigerator white with a lot of vinyl.

Excellent weekend for you, Jason. Great job!

Morris had 3rd in TTA on Saturday and I had 3rd and he had 4th on Sunday. I was 3 seconds off my pace from last month. Neither of us have a chance in coming close to the SE ringers anyway, but it was nice to get in some runs and learn a few things.

Little DE footage from a couple of e30's...No where near the action, but fun for us...

It was not a real fun weekend for me. After such a dominant weekend at VIR, something was amiss in the motor.

I hope it was one or more valve stem seals going or went bad. Something is siphoning oil into the cylinder. By the end of Saturday's race I was down at least a cylinder and things got no better Sunday. We will find out tomorrow.

We were talking Saturday night around the fire and came to conclusion the kink at CMP is one of the hairiest if not the hairiest turns on any of the local tracks.

Road Atlanta's turn 12 and turn 1 got honorable mentions.

That's what you get for having horsepower. In a Spec Miata it's no big deal. :D

(And yes, I've run it in stuff with horsepower...it's spooky. Spinning there can result in what I call the "Four Day Spin". You just slide and slide and slide forever. Hopefully. Otherwise it's the "Four Day Headache.")

I've not run at RA since they changed the track layout at the end of the back straight, but the old layout had the apex of turn 11 (the bridge turn) essentially right at the peak of the hill under the bridge. After the elevator shaft-like fall into the depths of the end of the back straight (which they have filled in a lot of now), you had a huge uphill braking zone to setup 11. Track out was far over into the pit entrance (original pit on outside of track) to setup for turn 12. I recall many times carrying a nice slight tail out drift down the hill toward 12 using up all the track. :)

Hence I assume now that they've essentially straightened out and eliminated the bridge turn, it must be possible to carry a lot more entry speed into turn 12? Has anyone run the old layout that can compare that entry/setup? Turn 12 was always a scary one, but it seems like it might even a bit worse now?

driving an e30, the cmp kink and ra's turn 12 are similar in that both can just *barely* be taken flat. but 12 is scarier because it's blind and there's far less runoff room. toss in a little rain...

ra turn 1 isn't as scary but it is definitely tricky. in the e30 it's taken in fourth gear and unless you nail it perfectly the revs end up below the torque peak and you just lug your way up the hill with the driver yelling "cmon motherf-----r move it!" at the top of his lungs. at least that's what happens in my car.

Looks like Jason and Evan are in a pretty good race for 7th for the NASA-SE points:

#7 Evan - 743
#8 Jason - 804

Are you both going to RA in December?
