Remnants of the filter, I suspect...Colin, have you considered plugging off the PS system entirely? Less risk of fluid loss, lighter, less drag on the engine w/o PS belt etc.

i suspect it was a manufacturing defect that caused the filter to be sucked from the reservoir into the suction line for the pump.

Thought about it, but this doesn't seem to be a popular mod for the E36. I think there are enough people with more money and smarts than me running with PS on the E36 who would have deleted it if it was worth it.

Yeah, the filter is the pink thingy. It appears to be a mesh screen supported by some plastic bits. It's hard to tell what it's supposed to look like since it's been completely deformed.
