With all the NCAC stuff going on, I’ve lost site of the CMP track event coming up in Oct. I’ve never been to that site, haven’t driven CMP and don’t know the lay of the surrounding area, so I’m a complete noob here. So I’m looking for a few things. First, I need to find someone that wants to share a room for Friday and Saturday evening.

I’ve ordered some track pads for the car and I have the new rotors sitting in the garage and the car is basically prepped. I would like some pointers on the track and what to expect. Should I fashion up some cheap brake ducts to keep the brakes cool? I’m thinking mid Oct and driving the car at 8/10’s, I should be ok.

OK, so if anyone is looking for a roomy, let me know please. Also send your advice on any gotcha’s for CMP for a rookie.

TIA!

Sorry, I'm already rooming with Judi. CMP's a fun track, but the rights can be pretty rough on your drivers front. Rotate your tires side to side and front to back between days. Stay off the outside gators....no really, stay OFF the outside gators. That's all I got for you.

Also Rodney if you get a chance to walk the track, do it. If nothing else walk over to the outside on T14 and you'll see why Stephen says STAY OFF those gators!

Don't worry about filling up before you get to the track. There is a station right at the entrance to CMP that sells real gas. (Not E85)

If you haven't already, find some youtube vids of the track so you get a feel of the corners, worker stations, etc.... and go over those until you can "see" the flow with your eyes closed. Works for me, anyway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTbEtRIquXQ is the one I used. Has a really nice unobstructed wide field of vision in front of the car.

what's with the left foot braking this guy is doing? it appears like he is checking his brakes with the left foot rather than actually trying to slow the car.

exactly. if you had a car that fast you might want to test the brakes now and then to make sure they still work.

i'm somewhat surprised this guy doesn't actually LFB in 3, 10, and 12. i started working on that skill this year, not 100% there yet but i think it has helped. here's some advanced LFB, notice how he sometimes snaps off a H&T downshift then changes his braking foot, all in one braking zone. tricky.

Bahhh, CMP is pretty easy to learn and drive. My first time at CMP at one of Stacy's track days, I rode with Bernie until I got sick and headed out on my own after that. Its flat with a bunch of right hand turns :)

Be smooth
Look ahead
Listen to your instructor

There will be no problems

Ryan has a good point Rodney. the track is easy to learn and it is very flat.

however getting faster at CMP is the hard part.

Pad knockback. The rotor comes off the hub a bit/flexes and pushes the pads into the calipers, that resets the pads so they are up against the rotor again.

Pad knockback may be an added benifit giving a more responsive pedal but the reason he's doing it is to check the brakes as Jason said.

I was there last month as a noob to it. It is a fun track, a little be left tire centric :( but fun. I found that it has a different flow than tracks like VIR, a little less flowing and more of the speed up brake variety but a lot of that was mostly due to a learning curve thing, I was using a lot more accellerator and less brake day two.

BTW if you are staying at the Colony Inn and want internet access, bring a long enet cable. There is no wireless and the cable they give you is too short to stretch even to the desk. Also, if you have AT&T there is no service at the hotel
