My wife and I were talking about this the other day. The internet has blurred what is socially acceptable in terms of communications and relationship. She will get in pissing matches (if anybody tells here this they are dead) when some friend of a friend on Facebook says something that she thinks is directed at her. Its like the TV can now argue back with us. It also allows us to see how stupid people are.

As to Sean and Steve's urine olympics, Society has changed to what it teaches (by example) is important. Basic education is not important anymore, you can become a gazillionaire without spelling, sentence structure, etc. Young kids example of success are not their principle anymore. I don't see this as a good thing but how do you stop it?

Lastly, Steve you are not a Democrat, you are a Libertarian. You rail on systems that were championed by the Democratic party (in this case public education and its dumbing down due to affirmative action type goals).

Wow, I am philosophical this morning!

Fixed some of it.

Since this thread has derailed already, I will add my two cents.

First Penny: I agree with the statements on the current crop of youth texting and how it has affected their spelling and written English skills. I constantly battle it with my oldest daughter.

Second Penny: However, as forms of communication evolve, words and vocal and written expressions change. Take ANY one of the posts in this thread and think about how they would have been communicated 400 years ago, 200 hundred years ago, heck even 50 years ago. We are in the middle of a shift in communication. This one is just more pronounced due to the available electronic technology. 200 years from now, what our children are texting today may look like longhand.

Ok, more than two cents worth, but I feel better being the devil's advocate.

-Kevin

you almost had me Kevin. but the English language is being butchered. a language that is arguably at least 1000 years old.

not in any form whatsoever is texting evolving the English language.

new words are a sign of an evolution of a language. the use of "r" & "u" as shortcuts for existing words is about as much English as Ebonics is a language. at least Ebonics can claim words added to the lexicon.

texting is the stupidest crap ever perpetrated on the general public. what is the point of typing on a device that allows two people to actually hear each others' voice and carry on a back and forth conversation in the process. holy shit, Alexander Graham Bell must be spinning like a steam turbine in his grave.

and don't get me started on the need to watch a movie on a telephone. OMFG...............

There is something funny about someone talking about the use of a 1000 year old language using contractions and abbreviations.

OMFG.....hmmmm, I think that is AIM/Texting based, no? Hopefully that was there for irony.

Steve, you'd love the shirt my wife found at the thrift store "I judge you when you use poor grammar".....I catch so many people intently reading it and then brush it off like they were not paying attention and try to speak very forced/deliberate afterward :).

Do not get me wrong, gentlemen, I agree with your stance.

I just want to point out that words have steadily gotten shorter and communcation more abbreviated ever since the Holy Rollers left the Island of Bitter Tea.

Have you read any thousdand year old documents lately? They make our Real Estate Legal Counsel at work look like my 14 year old daughter.

Someone remind me to get a sticker that says, " I C U PEEKN" and put it on Steve's car at our next event. ROTFLMAOAU. Ha!

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.
