If I start changing things that take me out of CS, is my next step csp?
If there is something in the middle I can run, what would it be?

Looking at the rules, it seams I cant run any of the street touring classes, but wanted to ask since I am still new to all of this.

What year Miata. That makes a difference, if it is a NA without a Torsen Diff you can run STS.

Your 10AE can run in CSP with suspension upgrades, convert it to a Spec Miata and run DSP (not likely), turbo/supercharge it and run SSM, chop the roof and run DP, drop in a 302 and run XP. Wait until rules come down the pipe for STsomething next year as well (STR?)

What Todd said. Additionally, I believe the car is eligible for the new STR class, which is Street Touring for roadsters and other "fast" 2-seaters (S2000s, Boxsters, etc).

Edit: nevermind on the NB in STS, I didn't know we were talking about a 10AE, which I believe has a torsen diff.

Stock viscous diff is fine (like a Sentra SE-R has). Torsen is disallowed.

Karl,

You are right, it looks like currently I will be allowed to run in str... unless they decide to start restricting on the limited slip.

Here is what I found on a quick google search

No, it won't be paxed. It'll be straight up.

Don't panic though; there are a lot of people who think the S2000 won't be the car to have for the class. The reason? Weight. All cars in STR will be restricted to a 255 wide tire. Given that, it's possible that the lightest car in the class will take the day. Could be an NB Miata, an NC MX-5, even an MR2 Spyder. Could be anything really, we just don't know yet.

STR should be a fun class, and I think a lot of people will end up building for it. I doubt that I will though. Having sampled street tires on Sunday for the first time in years, I'm not ready to put the Hoosier crack pipe down.

Yeah... im not ready to pick up the crack piper either :p

Pitting JUST the 99NB and the s2k against each other... both running the same sticky 255 wide tires. wouldent the extra power murder my car? I can cary the momentum though a little better, but the s2k makes just that much more power that it can make it up right?

also... 255's... 15x8's ... I really dont want to start rolling my fenders and fretting about cracked paint.

Jason, if it were me, I'd probably set that car up for CS and be done with it. But I've become a huge advocate for stock class cars in the last three years, so I'm biased.

To your question about the S2000 "murdering" your 10AE? Not necessarily. Take a look at the existing ST class. The top dog is the 89-91 Civic Si. There are plenty of cars that look on paper like they could be faster, but most of them aren't. The reason, to a large degree, is weight. They're all running the same tire sizes, so why not choose the lightest car? There are other factors, but weight is a big one.

Some people think the MR2 Spyder will end up the top dog in STR. We just don't know the answer yet, and it'll take a few years to shake out.

As to the fender rolling thing...that's your decision to make. Sounds to me like you'll end up with a "mild" STR build, if that's what you decide to do. If someone shows up in an STR S2000 that's been built to the highest possible level, you won't be losing because the S2000 is a class overdog - you'll be losing because you've got a car that isn't prepared to the limit, and the other guy has one that is.

(I'm trying to limit this discussion to the cars. Let's leave driver skill and course design out of it for now.)

This I agree upon... at this point... I can be driving the fully prepped s2k and still get my bum handed to me by a guy in a pinto :p

taking this statement to stock class for a second. Why dont they pit the nb or nc miata's against the s2k? isnt the power differnece one of the bigger reasons the s2k is turning faster times? or does it fall to the larger width rim's (wider tires) and better suspension?. Asking for education, not trying to argue points.

I will likely have a mildly prepped car at some point in some class. until I find my full sponsership, i dont think I can foot the bill :P

out of curiosity, why the favortisim to stock class?

A few years back, most all of us were getting out bums handed to us by a guy in a Pinto believe it or not.

to a degree, im not surprized... the driver is just about everything.

I rememeber seeing a pinto with a whole cut in the hood... for the overly large turbo... my nice v8 truck was left in the dust... I dont even think the car noticed me behind him.
