Looks like Falken has addressed the high temp grip issue of the Azenis compound, at least the marketing guys think so:

http://www.stamfordtyres.com/tpl/produc ... rt215.html

Hopefully they also shaved a few pounds ...

Interesting.

Falken's own web site doesn't mention either the compound change or the increase in sizes?

http://www.falkentire.com/tires/az_rs_sizes.htm

The "Stamford Tyres" site shows 15 sizes while Falken's site shows only 6. The 'copywrite' date on the Stamford site is 2002. Either that means the webmaster hasn't updated the pages correctly or the page is old. Could this "AZ Compound II" be the compound that is currently in use? I was under the impression that the Azenis was actually an old tire design that has been around for awhile (but generally new to the US).

Also this site looks to be for a company with locations in Singapore and Malaysia. Could this be non-US non-DOT certified tires?

Not sure I know the answer but the Azenis RT-215 designator on the Falken US site looked new to me. They used to be called Azenis Sport IIRC. You'll note that the the marketing here also mentions high heat resistance which looks new:

I'll refrain from mentioning the SCCA street class blurb :-)

I've also read that the Azenis Sport was made in many sizes not imported to the US.

I think that everyone calls them "Azenis" or "Azenis Sport", but I am pretty sure the official name always was "Falken Azenis Sport RT-215". I need to try to find my receipt to see if it says anything.

I tried Google, but it is not helping me to find anything that will back me up on this. :( Nearly every mention of the tire is either "Falken Azenis" or "Azenis Sport". You get some mention of the "other Azenis" which is the "ST-115" which has a totally different tread pattern. I think the ST-115 might be their "drifting tire".

If this really is a new tire/compound, I guess the next question would be to figure out how to tell new from old? The photos looks like they are using the same mold so I assume there would be some compound "code" buried somewhere on the sidewall.

Oh come on Frank where's the fun in that. Just think another cheater tire debate. Only this time we can call them Cheater Gen II.

Sorry I couldn't resist. Heck I'd buy them if they made them in the size I need. The price/performance is just too hard to pass up.

Well I might get to try these killer tires out next year if they release them early enough. Falken product engineer sent me an email saying that 275/40-17 will be available spring/summer of 2005. They're finally going to make those 'special' tires for big sports cars... 8)

In japan.....and they won't ship it to the US. I tried.....

Hankook though is being pretty cool with their new Z712. They are sucking hard with 17" sizes, but have a 245/45/16 coming sometime in the next 3 months. I'm supposed to get a set to "test" :D woohoo

Too bad it won't be eligible for nationals.
