My wife and I have joined recently, and she is signing up for the majority of the events that I am. We intend to share one car (for now).

Is there a specific numbering scheme that we should do? Or would it even matter if we run different run groups or classes?

How is this best handled?

The easiest thing is to run as number xx and number 1xx if you're both running in the same class. If she's running in a ladies' class, you can run the same number, and she can change the class on the car to reflect ladies' class.

Just *make sure* that you change the number and/or class when you switch drivers. If you don't, timing and scoring will get something wrong, and things will go haywire for you in a hurry.

You could (I think):

a) both run in ASP - register with a number , and add a digit for the second driver (1/11), or flip a 6/9

or

b) you run ASP, she runs Ladies with an ASP PAX, she can use the same number, just take off ASP and put on LAD

Welcome to the club (literally and figuratively). Malia and I have been car-sharing for many years - it's really no issue. In fact, we often 3-way share a car at Autocrosses with my father-in-law. The details are spelled out at the drivers meeting and there will be people on-site that can help you get started. Effectively, you will each have a unique class/number combination, and you will switch them between drivers. It helps if you have magnetic numbers for this - tape-on paper numbers make this process much more difficult.

You can run the same class or different classes. Malia and I found it was better for our marriage if we didn't run in the same class, so she runs in our Ladies class (LAD), and I run in an "Open" class.

Oh, and minimizing the amount of stuff you need to change helps too. We actually ran the same number, but since we ran different classes we only had to change one magnet on each side of the car.

Again - Thanks guys for your help!

This will definitely allow the events to be more fun, if the wife can enjoy them too.

I think we'll opt for different classes like you guys suggested.

Is there a common/recommended place to order these magnets from?

Oh yeah - welcome! Thought I recognized the name, but definitely the car :)

A good place for magnets is izoomgraphics.com

Any sign shop can do magnetics. I've had good experience with the one on Harrison right near I-40 (in the shopping center- can't recall the name). I'd jump on the web and find someplace convenient to you, then do a quick check to make sure folks like them ok.

Alternatively, you can make them yourself. You can buy magnetic sheets at craft stores but it's often thin and doesn't stick well. But sign shops usually have plenty of scrap pieces they'll give you for cheap or free. Then you can try cutting your own vinyl, or break out the Sharpie...

While I normally wouldn't post about this, but if he's rocking a '0 Nissan GT-R, $50 worth of magnetics certainly shouldn't break the bank. ;) - AB

Or the bank is empty after buying the GT-R  - we chatted about track consumables at a networking class

Grid will try to catch errors like this, so you do have another line of defense before it hits the start line. But yes, make it part of your routine when switching drivers, like the incoming driver always walks around the car to check the numbers/class before getting in. If you have a routine like that your chances of making a mistake are pretty low.

:-) True. But hey, some people like to make their own stuff- no harm in letting him know about the option...

AC Moore carries heavier guage stuff that has worked well for us. Only mag we've lost in 6 years was at a RallyX, where the dirt/sand spray coming off the front tires peeled the magnets off a couple times. Just at one specific event though :whoknows:

 I look to save money wherever I can.

Thanks a lot for the help! I'm going to try a local place then, as suggested.
