IIRC, just one cone kept you from doing just that.

Great event. Nice driving Art. Those decades of running in sand behind the wheel of a Mustang paid off!

Hats off to Keith too. Was that the first outing in the 330?

Third run video.

While I didn't spin in the sweeper I had some fixing to do. It's the first time I've run the car that loose. It's entertaining (and good for cording rear tires. )

Thanks to the folks that put everything together. Off to another great season!

Maybe an ITR in DS.

Awesome event yesterday! Really enjoyed the course, I had a nice spin on my 3rd run in the sweeper. With the 4.10 rear end I was in the rev limiter going through there and figured I try hitting third gear at the beginning of the sweeper, guess I got a little too much speed on the ice cold RA1s and next thing I knew I was backwards

Had a blast though! Looking forward to the next event

Did anyone consider just running over that cone in the center of the Chicago box just to keep speed through the end? Without it, there would have been a nice loooong straightaway to the finish.

I SERIOUSLY entertained the idea but was 50/50 if I would make up the 2 seconds by doing that. I went around it all four times in hopes I would err in favor of better times.

Funny you should mention that. It's a question that comes up every year.

You should be hearing from Wes soon.

We know a place where no cars go. If you think that it can be done, please go ahead and be our guest. Just be polite and inform the courseworkers that you'll be doing it ahead of time so that they can have spare cones ready. And be sure to have Lloyd from Colors on Parade on speed-dial for when you crack a bumper.

The event was certainly a blast! I really enjoyed the course layout and felt it had a good flow, but really made you look ahead to not 'get behind' in any of the approaching slalom sections.

Who was the noob that spun in the very first turn in the first run? Someone tell that guy about cold tires...

sorry!!!!!! i wasnt thinkin, got a little too excited about the first autox of the year!!! Def is not the forester where i can make it pull it out of it.

I would have "kissed" it more than I would have run it over. :P For whatever that's worth.

But seriously, it was completely un-scientific, but I counted seconds as some cars began braking to get into the chicago box (one-crocodile...two-crocodile...). I'd like to have some of the dataloggers chime in with how many feet it was to the chicago box center cone and how many feet it was from that cone to the finish (do dataloggers measure such a thing?) I'm not sure what I'd do with that information, but I could whip something up.

Maybe for you more experienced folks going around the cone was faster, but considering my inexperience, at least until I can run through some numbers in my head, for me it might have been faster to kiss it.

I agree though. The gap between the six cone slalom and the box was the second fastest part of the course and you didn't realize how small the opening was until you were in the middle of the braking zone. Great element for a safe finish though.

There were a number of us, I think, who wondered what would happen if we put Art in something that isn't a 20 year old fox body Mustang. I guess now we know.

I think everything just came together for me last yesterday. I've always loved the Laurinburg site. It was the site of my very first autocross, and where I got my first FTS (in my first A/X car, a Civic S). Yesterday I had a chance to drive a beautifully prepared car, with no expectations weighing me down. We'll see how it goes next time, assuming I can manage to squeeze my head into my helmet. I might have to borrow Jim (thank you for staying on your home planet yesterday) Feinberg's helmet :)

As for my old Mustang - http://photos.kestrelracing.com/p/kone_ ... sp_30_0122 - it can be made available as a training aid at the upcoming Evo school :D

Just to head off the inevitable question, we're having some problems getting AXware to produce the results right. Todd is gonna email Mr. AXware and see if he can get some help with this.

Will keep you posted.

Wow - big congrats to Art!

Belated thanks to everyone who put on the school and the event. I had fun, especially the Novice school - I think I managed to not ruin either of my students  - although the guy with the Focus did ask about buying my SVT wheels

How did STS end up? Mike W - I did get that 67, but +2  - thanks for the ride along and advice!

Sorry I couldn't stick around to help clean up - had to get my crap together for CMP.

Thanks to Charlie, and Phil for soldiering through the setup of the school and AX this weekend in far from optimal weather conditions and putting up with my bothersome "tweaking" in the name of safety. Everyone should also know that Phil did all this while being sick and far from 100%, marines really are tough.

I was stunned at Mr. McDonald's performance this Sunday, but it couldn't be more deserving. Art are you going to destroy us like that all year? Or will you allow someone else a chance? I knew you were good, but damn....

Excellent event. I loved the course, which illustrated just how rusty I was at driving hard. Then working Grid illustrated just how rusty I was at walking. :P

Went right on the optional every time. On the walkthrough it looked like the element before it was kind of tight and wouldn't have much speed coming out of it to carry, and going left would choke the exit at the last cone and require a speed drop through the slalom which isn't good for stability and transitions.

Going right had a tighter entrance but flowed well from the fairly slow previous element, and the exit set up the car much better for the following elements.

As for taking out the single cone in the chicago box, I'm the person who did that at Sanford last year. But then it wasn't in line with the other two significant cones, it was set a few feet out and could be straightlined under full acceleration (in a muscle car on all-seasons, I could accelerate but not turn).

On that occasion, straightlining it *just may* have been worth it. Without datalogging I'll never know. On that special case with the specific combination of cars and tyres, I think it was worth it. However, in all the time I've autocrossed, I think it's the *only* one that *might* have been worth it. It's a major exception.

But I would make a sweeping statement that if you have to turn at all, however slightly, to hit that center cone you'd be better off doing the box properly. Likewise if you can't turn the section into a long drag strip and are in a car that's built for that, you're better off doing the box.

And Art just simply rocked.
