ok, so there are some comments on the board eluding to other web sources where the Z1's are getting decent reviews. I know at least Kendt has them actually mounted - initial thoughts from the first week of use?

The 'stones are out of my price range in the 17's I'll need this year, but the Z1's are only slightly more than Azenis. Anybody have any new insight to share? These would be in 17" for the M3 in STU and HPDE duty.

I like - but haven't pushed them too much. This weekend will tell the tale - first L'burg and then CMP :D .

Can you get them in your sizes? I know there were certain sizes that TR sold out of very quickly. As the word got around, people snapped them up, and Dunlop hadn't anticipated them being so popular.

Judi W just got some on thier Fit, too.

I assume you've read this:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh ... ght=dunlop

They mention a 2-month backorder for the size you're likely to want...

Interesting...STirish mentions liking the stock STi 070's. They are a damn good tire. However, I like the 01R's better as daily drivers (wet including) and feel that I am faster on them during autoX. They stick a hell of a lot better during transitions. If the Z1's are better than the 01R's you won't get a better street tire, espcially at their price.

Yup. Hopefully we have some time for fun runs so that I can get a taste of them.

Update: Jeb and the Rack both confirm that the Z1's are now discontinued. TR tole me that a new tire, the "Z1 Star" is on it's way to replace the Z1, but no ETA (at least not that the guy I talked to could find in his notes).

So, what should "Plan B" be? The easy answer is the RE01R's, but Bridgestone is MIGHTY proud of the common BMW sizes right now (245/40/17 preferred). Azenis are an option, but more than a couple M3 owners have been vocal on their lack of grip, and I have to say my experience yesterday seemed consistent. I am, however, admittedly still deep in the learning curve for this car, and was finding that at times the car could turn more if I just gave it more steering input. You mean this doesn't have a Miata steering rack??

What to do, what to do....

Doesn't help from a cost standpoint, but the E36 ST* folks on the forums seem to think the Yokohama Advan Neovas may be the top performer. Very pricey, though.

Yeah, at something approaching $250 a pop, they make the stones look cheap!

I'm a big fan of the RE01R's. I had the RE010's on the ITR and while the grip was about equal (IMO), Azenies just can't compare to how they wear and ride. I got about 5k out of azenies with the ITR, and I'm in the neighborhood of 8k with these RE01R's and I plan on at least two more autocrosses and a couple thousand more miles. I'm at the same crossroads.

I bet if you look into something with 500 treadwear or higher, you'll be able to use them for several seasons, making them really cheap. Yeah, and if you like them, I'll get a set too!

my 320 treadwear a/s OE tires has 3k miles on them, 2 test n tunes, and one event, and i have about 2/32" tread left...high treadwear means nothing if you're sliding around everywhere...

i really need to learn to conserve tire at autox.

Or buy a set of Konis, a set of the smallest wheels that will fit over your brakes shod with Azenis 8) run for half a season and then buy a Miata. Wait, that's what I did with a tire-eating street tired car. YMMV.

I liked them at the track, too. They look to be more durable than the Azenis. I've got to learn to use them to 100% - they squeal like all-seasons at the limit, which for noobs like me is a good thing.
