Just went out for lunch in RTP and saw a field of orange cones set up in the big parking lot at the closed EPA site (Hwy 54 & Alexander Dr. in RTP). No one was there, but the cones all had "DTCC" (Durham Technical Community College?) printed on them, and it's clear they are set up for some type of driving event.

Anyone know anything about it?

Any chance of revisiting this as a potential autocross site?

It's a training route for Durham Co and State Trooper Law officers.

Sorry...

I guess you can sneak in, they keep it up all week every other week.

They've set up courses there a few times - you can get the "birds-eye" view from Alexander Dr. It's very tight with a million cones - they must be training bicycle cops or how to drive fast thru an alley.

This site has been discussed before... but my question to you guys who want to run there is this- Is it a good potential autox site? I haven't been out there in long time, so my memory is fuzzy.

I have not yet tried to get this site for us because most of the feedback I've gotten about it has been not so positive. It has lots of light poles and curbs if I remember right.

Thoughts from those of you that have seen it....?

My take is to find out if we can even have access to it and at what cost. If we can, then run a test event there. Much like we did at Rockingham. And go from there.

We dropped two parking lot sites this year. It would be nice to see if we could add one.

When I have gone by that site, I believe we could set up a course. It would be similar to the south lot at RBC.

IIRC, it does have light poles, but little to no curbing. Can't be any more difficult to deal with than the ESA lot.

It's pretty oddly shaped. In total there is a lot of asphalt, but it's chunked out into small-ish discontinuous sections radiating off a road by the building. We'd need to be creative to put together a course that flowed well. If you could figure out how to link them all together safely, you could actually have a pretty long course.

Here's a link if you want to see an aerial photo...

They use Goodyear RS-A's. I got second at rocky mount with these on my car. They get really hard as they age though.

I think the site is now under new ownership as well. Triangle Health services?

If it's still owned by EPA and only being leased, let me know. I may have some in's there.
