1. What was the deal with the drug sniffing dog? I know this is TV and that they are trying to promote the "bad boy" with "pumped up tattoo covered forearms and dark sunglasses", but I found it insulting. Frankly I would have left that bit on the editing room floor.

Agreed, the drug and weapon statement was unnecessary and the dog was complete overkill and stupid. I felt like that was part of a different FOX show. Maybe Cops or something.

Quote:
2. They could have cut down on the fluff a bit and actually listed names of people. I remember them listing the names at the bottom of the screen of a few people, but if they have twelve teams, they could have listed them all. I assume Courtney is the big blond guy with Junior Johnson? It was kind of confusing about how they asked them to partner drivers up.

It was pretty stupid that they didn't list the driver's names. The perfect time to do that was while they were handing out "sponsors."

Quote:
3. I assume the on-track action they showed is from this season and it looked to include a handful of metal on metal contact. Which makes me think that it is going to result in someone getting screwed by aggressive or bad driving. I wonder if they will penalize those who use the "chrome horn" to pass?

They better have stiff penalties. I know that if I was taken out by a punk like that Piquet kid and didn't get to advance, I would have to beat his Brazillian ass.

Quote:
4. Who is this female co-host and is she there to do anything other than look good? She have any racing background? Danica was a bit dry onair last season, but at least she is a racer.

Overall, it looks like it will be interesting to watch.

Richard

I seem to remember that the female "host" last year was just there to look pretty and say about 5 words per episode. She'll probably have the same job this year.

Interesting. These two items really bothered me, too. If it wasn't for several of y'all saying it was a good, legit show last season, I would've turned it off after the the opening drugs & weapons scene - that was absolutely uncalled for and REALLY irritated me. If their intention was to make this group of talented drivers look like a bunch of freakin' loser drug-pushing pimps, they certainly gave it a valiant effort. F**king RIDICULOUS!!! I'm honestly surprised none of the drivers called them on it, but I guess no one was going to rock the boat after getting on the show.

Tommy Kendall also came off pretty poorly as a host, seemed to be nervous and searching for what to say next. I've seen him on other Speed Channel programs before and never had that impression - I guess he's a lot more comfortable behind the wheel than trying to carry a show with questionable direction.

Another problem I had with Setup is that they started off with no explanation of what the show was about - it just seemed to move pointlessly in spastic directions with no end in sight. By the end of the hour, I think I sorta got the idea, but, being the first show of the season, it would be nice to start out by hearing what the show was actually about instead of trying to figure it out on the fly.

Although it's great to see grassroots guys getting a shot at something bigger, if the first show is any indication of what's to come, I don't see it as worth the effort to watch. Hopefully, the next episode will turn my opinion around.

If last year is any indication, I wouldn't look forward to your opinion changing much. The editing is all about creating conflict between the drivers and trying to invoke "emotion" in the viewer. Definitely only watchable with a DVR so you can blast through all the pointless and mind-numbing parts. I agree on the drug dog thing too -- what an incredibly ridiculous and insulting beginning to the show.

I'm glad the show is back. I thought the drug sniffing dog was worthless to show too. I was also annoyed they did not include names when interviewing people etc. It's also not clear to me how two drivers/car is going to work. If one driver is eliminated, is the other too? Also, what was with the interogation of the Brazilian guy with no real outcome. If he is a fraud, just take care of it and move on.

I am going to keep watching. Sure, they will edit it to pump up the drama (like any "reality" show), but at the end of the day there is going to be some on-track drama that only the drivers can create (i.e. someone is really going to bubble to the top) and that should be fun to watch. I know the entire thing is over at this point, but I don't know if they have the entire show already edited and in the can. Maybe they will get some feedback on the drug dog bit and try to tone down the stupid crap like that in later episodes.

I don't know if I like or dislike Tommy as a host. At least they have a racer on there vs. some pretty boy who doesn't have a clue. I would hate to have his job to tell guys to go home who were slow at the carts.

I kind of enjoyed the cart drive off, but I can only imagine the look on my face when finding out that the first thing was a cart contest. All 6'5" and 270 lbs of me would get my ass kicked by all of the lightweight drivers.

It surprises me still that people weren't at least expecting it... do at least a LITTLE research to find out if it's a NEW show, or not... and if not... track down some old episodes to get an idea of what to expect. Hell.. do this during the application process for cryin out loud.

Watched the season's second episode last night, thankfully it was better than the first. Way cool that Mike "Junior" Johnson won the oval course shootout with zero track experience.

Anyone else notice that the burnout / spinning tire graphic they show when transitioning to/from commercials shows the tire spinning backwards?

I was only able to watch 1/2 of it last night. Did they take the two winners from the two heats and race just them?

Anyone watch last night?

I am still finding it very entertaining and very confusing at the same time. It is hard to follow what is going on. The driving in the back of the pack looks to be totally out of control and you never know who is leading the race until they wave the checker flag.

Here is a good thread that has posts from a few people on the show (Mike Skeen, Pedro and a few others).

i've been watching...here's my take.

on the show - the producer should be handcuffed and beat about the head and neck. there absolutely no flow to the show. you can't tell one car from the other while on track. this year they put nametags on the helmets, but what good does that do us when you are just looking at in car shots.

why do they feel the need to recap the last 30 seconds of the show when returning from every commercial break. crap, you end up watching the same thing twice for about 5 mins total.

on the driving - those guys/gals are out of control. the first race wasn't bad, but the 2nd was nuts. there's no driving etiquette at all. they seem content to just plow into each other's cars with abandon. there seems to be no such thing as a track official except for the show hosts. when they see a wreck, they just all start yelling RED FLAG RED FLAG. They punished one guy by sending him to the back of the pack for "dropping a wheel" when that was going on all over the place. And then, after he went to the back, he passed the slower car and a few minutes later they got on his case for not pushing hard enough...dang, didn't they just penalize him for pushing too hard.

i really like the show dispite all that. i really whish they'd make the cars different colors so we could figure out who's who.

Masking tape with black marker.

I agree you can't really tell who is who on track.

I learned this from the BMW forum thread that apparently last year they had problems with rocks getting kicked up and doing damage to the radiators. They are using beefer non-stock radiators this year as well as a screen to protect, but they apparently don't want to loose a car due to the same issues as last year, so they are giving them a hard time about cutting corners and/or pulling dirt onto the track. Apparently they realized that the "put the car at the back" punishment didn't work, so they apparently did a number of stop and go penalties that they didn't show on air.

I watched it last night with Stephen and Les and found it to be really difficult to follow. The "creation of drama" is pretty weaksauce to me. The producer needs to spend some good quality time at the business end of a waterboard too.
