so, what exactly is meant by "drills"? I suppose thats what turned me off a bit to it, but maybe I'm misunderstanding what we're talking about
I am not speaking for Art, but I will share my suggestions that I shared with him.
Area 1: A high, high speed slalom that leads into a turn around. After the turn around, a couple of fast lane changes.
A five cone slalom with about a 30ft pacing will get your heart rate. You will push it until you spin. Find the limits of grip. Any changes you make to the car, to your line are amplified 10 fold. How fast you make it through the exit offsets is determined on how slow you exit the turn around
Area 2: A constant changing turn around. The entry and exit points will change through out the morning. Keep the entry and exit elements the same, but vary the entrance and exit.
Pretty straight forward.
In the afternoon, link the two areas together and get a 35 second course. Each group has 12 cars, make your run, evaluate your run and get ready for your next run. Make a total of 4 runs in a period of 30 minutes or so.
Toss in a few course walks prior to the afternoon runs. Now you learn to walk the "perfect" line. And when you return to the grid, mentally compare your run to the walk's "perfect line". What change(s) do you need to make get the car on that line. A great mental exercise. You do that, get fluids, check the car in about 10 minutes....
The above helps you with running with other clubs and their formats. One of the biggest complaints you hear from THSCC people is they can not adjust to making their runs concurrently. Too stressful. It doesn't have to be stressful if you learn in a low-key, familiar setting.
Those were the ideas I shared with Art and he is no obligated to use any of it.
I can tell you from my experience at Nationals, the mental prep is the most important. A course is a course is a course. But when you let the event get to you, prepare to finish mid-pack. It is the cool cucumbers that have the right mental state of mind that run really, really well.
