Well, this is the autocross that Jackie and I turned down the ProSolo to go to this past weekend. I guess she's (I'm) glad she didn't have to endure that "special" competition in L1 anyway.

My son, Andy, who is a couple of years older that Jackie, also drove in his first autocross other than the Performance Center school's autox he previously drove in a couple of years ago. He co-drove the 330i with Jackie, and I took the M5.

Here's a video below of the 4th run. I missed out on my 5th and 6th runs due to a huge thunderstorm as I really wanted to run again to correct numerous errors in this run. This was a really fast course with the M5 hitting almost 90mph on the start straight and getting into 3rd gear (2nd runs out at 67mph) in numerous places. Fortunately, I was able to nail down FTD amongst the 50 or so BMWs and Minis there. I think 2nd FTD was a Mini S on A6s about two seconds back from my 1:36.9ish time.

What an incredible course Mike Renner (chief instructor at the Performance Center) setup for the BMW club. Being at the PC for an event like this really puts BMW's focus on performance in perspective real quick. They haven't totally lost sight of their roots...not yet, at least. They have been expanding and expanding this place, and about 1/3 of the way into the video you can see the transition into the new section that was just built a few months ago.

Anyway, here's the video (this is my first digital video...guess its about time to graduate from 8mm analog...with a camera borrowed from Brian Marks  ):

an autoX with elevation changes and a slolam in a turn. sheist, that actually looked like fun.

Not enough (something like 20-25% I think)...at least for VIR R-comp advanced/instructor type driving. They are a great compromise for street use I guess. I'm considering switching to some new design Ground Control coilovers later this year with much higher spring rates. The car rides amazingly nicely with the GC setup -- Brian Marks has the gen 1 version on his M5.

The slalom in a turn was very tricky. I've never experienced something like that, of that size/length, (mainly because few autox locations have enough room for a huge radius turn like that I guess) before in almost 32 years of autocrossing. It finally occurred to me in this 4th run that I needed to treat it unlike any other "slalom" I had driven before.

I ended up left foot braking the entry to each left turn -- the direction of the corner which was much more difficult than turning right -- to get some serious weight transfer for the turn-in. Then I did a smooth transition to the throttle around the cone and could hold some steady throttle while turning right before smoothly LF braking once again. That fourth run was the first time I tried that, and if you look at the later part of that slalom turn, I was finally getting the hang of that rhythm...then rain had to come and cancel the rest of my potential runs.

Oh, and yep, it was one of the most fun autocrosses I've ever driven. :)

Yep, stock system. It is actually very quiet in person, outside the car. @%*$%!&

Good god why whould you want to do that when you have a nicely prepared E30? The 540 absolutely sucks at putting power down with 1WD.

Yep, they really speak to you once you get near the limit or beyond...sort of a deeper howl than a more street-type tire. They make very little noise until you get right near the peak where they are lightly howling, and if you dive them over the other side of the peak they let you know it.

Hmmmm, I like that. I may have to give a set a shot next year for Track.

I've used the Nitto R2 and they work pretty much like Chuck describes. They make a nice go-between tire. Say between something like an Azenis and a Hoosier. I've heard nothing but good things about the newer NT-01 version. A bit better cornering ability than the R2 predecessor. I'm definitely considering these as my primary track tire for next year. They come 6/32" and do not require shaving.

These tires work great as delivered at 6/32. Discount Tire Direct has great prices on them also -- cheaper than RA1s from anybody. The 275/35-18 was $249 shipped, no tax.
