To update on BFG R1 tires ... I got a set of six new R1s in 255-40-17 for a great deal and had them out at VIR a few weeks back. In a word, they were superb. Grip level is fantastic, and feel was very precise. I'm used to Toyos which create max grip at a lot of slip angle, and the R1s are a lot more like a Hoosier in their feel.
They heated up very fast, within 3-4 corners if really pushing it, easily within a half a lap. Wear was great with just some rounding of the grooves.
Heat tolerance was fantastic (in February) even with multiple HARD laps. They eventually got greasy after 8-10 laps for me. They seemed to outlive Toyos in their heat endurance.
Time will tell how they (1) wear, (2) heat cycle out over age, and (3) perform as a dual-duty track and autocross tire. For as good as they are new, I will go back to Toyos for track tires if I don't get at least 4 good hard track weekends out of them.
