Todd, I think you are better off going to DC if you had to choose just one. While the DoubleX is fun, I think the "regular" dual-course Pro format is slightly better at this point. :whoknows:

One thing I know for sure, Saturday at the DoubleX is going to be a loooong day.

I second Jim's opinion. Sure there's a lot of money on the line at the Doublecross, but I'm one that is hoping the traditional 2 course format ProSolo will survive.

That combined with DC is one of the best asphalt sites on the East Coast ;) - AB

I did notice how it isn't stopping you from going though. I will be there at both events as well.

Dude, I'm running every weekend from sometime in early February to late November. The DoubleX fits right into my schedule and it sure beats hoofing it to Peru that weekend. Heck, I'll race in the dirt if that's what is required-- I'm not proud! Oh wait, I already do that occasionally.

I must say that the Gwinette County Fairgrounds is one of my favorite sites on the east coast. While it has a few "bumps of death" (similar to VMP in spots), the elevation changes and course variety is major league fun for me. It is almost like a mini FedEx field lot.

Actually it was a horror movie a couple years ago! Oh wait, it was real...

We registered a few minutes ago. What a hateful registration site!!!!
Said the event was full at 7:03, but only showed 115 registered. Tried to put ourselves on the waiting list but it then registered us.
Can't have 2 people with the same email addy. Took 10 minutes to navigate thru it for each of us. :?

I had the same problem Chuck, so I just took a shot in the dark by registering on the waiting list and it entered me. I know Heyward released a statement saying the sight refused to reopen registration and just to use the waiting list option.

yes I saw that after slogging thru it. That reg site makes MAE and SCCA.org look streamlined.

Alright, I've got the hitch installed (mostly...still a pretty hateful affair if you ask me), the tires are on the UPS truck, and the hotel room is booked.

First time ever doing a Pro while simultaneously trying to be one of the "fast guys" (with little success thus far, but I'm learning). Sounds like DC was a lot to take in. Fortunately, I'll be down in Atlanta with a whole bunch of people that I know, so hopefully, it won't be too too bad.

This is however turning into the single most expensive motorsports weekend I've ever been a part of short of Bondurant school eleven years ago...and it's not real far off that mark. Including all the stuff to facilitate this event:

- $400 for hitch plus who knows for registration and insurance
- $1200 for tires
- $80 for entry fee plus t shirt
- $150 or so in gas I'm thinking (three tanks worth, at least)
- $100 to buy Spratte's tire trailer
- $200 or so budgeted for food and whatnot
- $300 or so for hotel costs

Plus any surprises...that's well north of two grand.

Nationals may be off the books for me simply because of finances.

Adam, normally I'd offer up the seat in the S2000, but I'm under strict "don't take a codriver to Atlanta" instructions from one of my mentors. It is tempting though, especially with the knowledge that I'm gonna have to horse around with that blasted trailer hitch this week...

That sounds about right. The only why to offset some of the cost is to have a co-driver. That only really helps with fuel and lodging. With two drivers, you go through tires twice as quickly.

To be competitive you really need a new set of tires for every couple of national events. The top drivers will have them, so you need them. You can use the tires with 20 runs on them for local events.

If you are hooked on the big events, figure you need the exhaust work and possibly custom shocks. The top drivers have them, so you need them :-)

Atlanta is close by. You will need to budget in vacation time. For most events, you need to leave Thursday night and find lodging Thursday night too. If you are really tough, you can make the run back Sunday night and report to work on 2-3 hours of sleep. How much are 6-8 days of vacation worth driving a noisy, rough riding car to some god forsaken location that the locals don't even know exist? Say each vacation day is worth $600.

The list goes on and on...I have the Visa debt to show what it cost over 7 years :-)

I would guess each National event will run you on the north side of $1000 (tires, lodging, food, misc) not including car prep amortization or vacation.

When I sold the MR2, the bed of my Silverado was full of tires mounted on rims (and I mean full). I had unmounted tires packed in the backseat area and crammed into the front seat....all the spare parts where in the MR2 itself.

Am I sorry I did it? Not really. I gave it shot and competed at the Nationals 3 years (always finished mid-pack though), got as high as third in the country in the national rankings a few years back for ES and made a lot of friends along the way. It took me a long time to realize that $1000 for 6 minutes of competition was a bit out of my ballpark. And it is hard to have local events give you that rush of competing against Roberts, Piccone, Cashmore, Brown, Newhard, etc.

I really think the experience paid off on track.

It's funny Jim posted this. I hit my wall this weekend. After my Sunday morning runs, I was so angry that I nearly threw my helmet into the Jersey barrier at impound. I'm glad I refrained.

I've decided to hang up racing for a while. I spend too much time and money on it for little satisfaction. I've had good success at the National level and yet after winning Huntsville I wasn't a tick excited. Granted, with only two cars there, even beating a dude that finished 14th at Nationals in '05 on corded tires didn't seem like a big deal.

This weekend frustrated me because I didn't perform and realized that I burn a lot of vacation and money doing this with little to gain. I've got a lot of trophies that do mean something to me, including 3 wins and a 5th at Nationals and 4th overall in ProSolo. I would love to be a National Champ someday, but at this point, I don't have the desire or time to chase it anymore. - AB
