Yeah, I could live without coning away a 60.5.

Twice

We could use a color of chalk that would be different from the other marks on course, like blue. That would be easier to find among the sea of cone markers out there. :D

Here's a challenge for someone:

Come up with a way to make a wax-based, highly visible, 2" diameter "crayon" using cheap materials that is easy to produce.

I'm thinking something like candle wax with some kind of fluorescent dye poured into used paper towel rolls would make for *excellent* course marking crayons.

The little lumber ones are just too small, break easily, and aren't visible.

Who wants to give something like this a try? Anyone have suggestions for sources?

http://www.greatbigstuff.com/crayon.html

Big enough for ya?

Crayola makes a 5x9/16in crayon - maybe load some up in a pipe/dowel arrangement and use that to mark the course?

Not bad.

Here is another option

Could Ebay make links any longer?

Rough estimate of 1ft square for each cone, that's 50 cones/can.

$4.25+shipping for every 50 cones doesn't sound too bad. I respectfully turn down my nomination and nominate Ash Nelson

I think that's just about perfect. Want me to order a case? I think day-glow orange would be great.

I had a recipe that I came up with about a year or so ago. It was a mixture of day glow orange powder marking chalk and candle wax. I used the center tube from a role of toilet paper as a mold for the mixture to cure in. It worked fine. I took it to one of the Wed lunches at Rudinos to show it to the guys. They said it looked fine, but didn't want to use it for
2 reasons:
1 - They felt it would stay on the surface too long (days/weeks after the event)
2 - Some didn't like it because they felt it would cause grip issues with their tires if they ran across it (personally, I had to laugh at this one!!)

I haven't had a chance to go back and try a different formula. I thought about using some ratio of elmer's glue and the marking chalk. Once it cures, it would be a solid marker that wouldn't have the concerns that come from using the wax.

This way we could order one can per event, once you used up the can you are not allowed to put out any more cones. This would challenge any course designer to be a cone minimalist and keep cone carnage to a minimum. (this comes from 1/2 of the team that had a course with the most cone carnage in thscc history)

Ash Nelson for President.
