The third autocross weekend in a row was a blast. It almost made me forget about the turd that was laid on the Greensboro Coliseum parking lot. This is the fourth different club that I've run with so far (this one being VMSC) and I'll have to admit, we are head and shoulders above anybody else as far as organization and volunteerism goes.

In attendance were Aaron and Bryan Buckley (not that there's anything wrong with that), Les Davis, myself and the Franks. Beautiful weather, third gear course, nothing broken or hit, and all is well in the world.

Not having everybody in class run in the same heat is teh suck.

Having a cone attached to Donna's quickest time was a bigger suck!!!
They have club rule that if you hit a cone on a run then get red flagged, stop for a downed cone etc that cone penalty is carried over and charged on your rerun.

5 runs on a 60 sec course that wasn't gritty or slippery was priceless!
Start at noon, (we didn't have to leave for the event until later than the time THSCC registration opens) 5 runs plus a handful of reruns for ~ 100 cars and packed up before 4:30 isn't totally disorganized...
They now have wireless start and finish lights as well as FM broadcasting.
Is that footsteps I hear?

You'd be hearing footsteps if the results were posted yet.

Our lifestyle is now accepted in a few states ;)

I had a good time, although the car didn't like hot tires too much. Yes, at times I was driving at 11/10ths, but I did get down to a 56.7 with a cone on my 3rd run. They called it an off course, but I hit T-boned the outer most cone on the fast turn around and carried it with me through the corner, but for some reason they called me OC. No biggie. Even as bad as that corner was, I was pleased with the time.

Jinx Jordan put on a show with a 56.x in an FSP car. That's cooking.

I'm sure Charles would agree, but their run order sucks when you only have about 13 cars in your heat, like we did in heat 4. I would come in, spray the tires and barely have enough time to get the pressures bled before I was back on course. There was really no time to evaluate your run, which wasn't so good, but I was back in Charlotte by 8:45pm, so I can't complain. - AB

Hey Aaron - were you guys towing the RX-8? I think I saw you at about 8:30AM on I-85 as I was crossing over on the Duke street bridge. I was towing the Subaru up to Orange County. Didn't have enough time to honk and wave.

Yeah, that was us. That V10 Excursion is a little rough on gas at 11.5 mpg towing, but the aluminum trailer does help :) - AB

I volunteer to go the mall and have a big ass cookie made up for them with icing decoration congratulating them for getting to where we were three years ago.

 un-cool dood.

I'd say that yes, THSCC has a lot going in the organization department, maybe topnotch for autocross in this area. I work in the bus sometimes, I know. Todd, especially works his butt off to make sure that it's that way...never mind what others like Emie have put into it.

But I'd also say that there are other positives to look at...

You have to admit running at VMP is a blast. It's clean, asphalt and big. Girly things like real bathrooms are nice. Air is available. The course was a little busy, but because it was, it really made you work at virtually every type of autocross manuever. Slaloms, sweepers, offsets, second and third gear sections, and no pivot cone.

Like Aaron, I was really happy for the most part. It's always better to leave the orange guys alone, but the seat time was great. These types of courses really help when you're figuring out a new car. In my case, I gained a lot by getting feedback from Jinx and Jr. who were running the same event.

Hey, VMSC has real trophies Wes.

(And the food and friendly conversation at Gieseppe's after the events is always a pleasure. Some kidding, lots of course analysis, hand shaking and hugs around. OK, so maybe that's girly too. So sue me.)

A cookie?

Trust me, I know these people too and they also work their butts off for the events. Maybe it's not as perfect yet, but give them some credit...or help.

Yes, Chuck would agree...me too. That heat was small and running in number order has never been my favorite either. Our spray bottle decided to bite the dust, so I wound up pouring water on the tires for Chuck. Love getting that many runs and it was still before 5:00. :)
Number order allows for too many variances. Cars in the same class don't run together unless they happen to have numbers close enough to each other.
But until they can completely go over to another system, car number order was the best way for them to record times manually and keep up. I worked in the bus and wrote times during first heat yesterday. Truly, they are making progress. They have gone over from time cards to audit type sheets, so less work during the event. They have also just started using myautoevents for registration and I think other changes will come as time and money is available. They just bought a wireless setup too, and are in the process of getting that going. Like any club it depends on the work force available and many times the experiences of those involved to make good changes.

Good point...I get anxious to see them too. And we are spoiled with THSCC's quick results.

I like the start light at Triad...I'm not used to the cellphone sound going off yet...but I like having it. :D

Actually I had two major autocrossers tell me that they thought that the course at Greensboro was very representative of the types of small courses at nationals as far as transitions and technique with the major exception of the 180 degree pivot. Yes, that element sucked.
Personally, it wasn't my very favorite course there, but I could see their points.

Hey Wes, who will you be running with next?

I too am awaiting seeing the results, since they don't run by classes you have to wait until the results to see what you did compared to everyone else. They run their bus with 2 people, one on computer and radio, the other on raw sheets and announcing. They don't do trophy presentation at the event so they don't audit or compile the results until later. It likely will take some extra time because they are still working out some incompatabiities with the wireless and the timers so the times displayed were in minutes and seconds so someone will need to translate all the times on the raw sheets. Heck it wasn't until recently that SCCA posted national results sooner than several days after the event. AFA running in numerical order, that's the way their membership prefers it, each to their own. I just love running @ VMP, so I can forgive a lot.

Donna, love ya, but I have to respond.

If you ever thought that the big cookie was serious, then you'd miss my point completely. The Big Cookie (tm) is reserved for Triad. Har.

I like a lot of things about VMSC. Especially VMP. Regulating four heats into numerical order without classes being involved, not so much. But the access to water and toilets and handwashing? No problem here, I like that as much as anybody, woman or not. Not running with classmates, not so much. But I will be running with the bestest club evAr this coming Sunday in Greenville. THSCC. Awww.

Tire Rack is getting a call. Now's the time to blame the equipment.
