trying to build a car and then trying to run at the national level at the same time is futile.

I completely agree with this. I did not have 2 events where the car was the same this year. I changed something after every single event.

I would go with a proven winner. The MR2 is youre best bet IMHO.

Most of you probably have never seen Tim's 924S in action - it's pretty darn impressive. When Tim and Kevin Bailey (MR2) were battling in 1997 they were regularly beating all the Miatas (then BS) as well as AS. That car is a deal - I've thought many times about buying that car from him. I have no doubt that if he had continued to drive that car in ES he would have won a few National Championships. FWIW, that is a nationally competitive car, though likely not as cheap to maintain as a MR2.

Jim, I've gotten to know you well enough to see that you really enjoy horsepower. A rwd, high horsepower car seems to fit you and your driving style.

You could consider a third gen f-body, like a Firebird Formula or a Chevy Z28. The third gen cars are a good bang for the buck. (Third gen was from 1982 to 1992). The later third gen cars, from 1988 to 1992, can still be nationally competitive in F-Stock from what I hear. The fourth gen cars have also come down in price and can be a blast to drive. The LS1s have so much power...

If you are willing to look nationally for a car, a 1LE version of either generation can still be had. But the 1LE option is not required to have a nationally competitive f-body.

The third gens are getting a little old now, but the initial purchase price should be pretty reasonable. Parts and maintenance may get to be expensive just because they have so much age on them now.

In keeping with the rwd, high horsepower theme, an 88 or 89 Vette can sometimes land in your price range. If you do your own work, they aren't too bad. Parts can be expensive though.

Just a few thoughts.

My dream-car that may someday become reality: 1985 318i with an OBD-1 3.2l M3 motor with cams, same suspension as my car has now but with some improvements that are legal in SM. Should be about 300 crank HP and about 2500lbs. Plus it would make a fantastic track car.

Hey Mike, I think you would enjoy this:

OT: BMW E30 + boost = dear god

Maybe Jim should buy it and run it in SM.
