Thats the only 15" size the Falken comes in I think, which might be why he went so narrow. Is the Falken really that much superior of a tire that a 205/50 is a better choice than a 225/45 Hankook RS2 Z212 that can still be put on a 15x7?

He and I both ran the Hankooks and neither of us felt they gave the overall grip of the Falkens, plus you can only get the Kook in a 225/45/16, which was worse gearing than the 205/50/15.

The Hankooks also needed to be shaved to be faster (3/32" or less preferably) and were noisy as hell, even when giving them smooth inputs. The Azenis (215 or 615) can be run fast at full tread and rarely make any noise.

If I were you Brice, I'd buy the 15x8's and run the 205 Azenis RT615 on it. Russell Blume did a test on his '91 318is for the 6 events he ran it Nationally in STX, and the car was over .5 second faster on 15x8's as compared to 15x7's with the same tire and wheel weight differentials of less than 1 #. - AB

interesting, about the different wheel widths making that big of a difference, thats what I was wondering about, cuz it felt a LOT better when I started running 215/45-17's on my 7" wide wheels instead of my 6.5" wide stocks. I'm not a good enough driver though to know that if something feels better, its for sure faster, but its seems either by luck or intuition, my initial thought was correct, that the extra width to the wheel is worth it, even if tire width is restricted. btw, the 'kooks ARE available in 225/45-15, at least these guys seem to think so (these are the same people who sell the 15x8 wheels I posted, and those are the only wheels they sell and the only size, so I'm guessing they make them now):

Perhaps its a newly released size? I dunno. . .

Thanks for your help guys!

I guess they finally came out in that size. I'd still go with the Azenis. - AB

Courtney's suspension also is well sorted out and works for him rather than against him. If I were to do a torquey FWD heavy car that didn't have enough front camber again, and I were to do it on street tires, I wouldn't roll on 15s. Been there, done that, wore out the first set of Azenis in half a season.

Camber bolts will be Brice's friend. In STX they're legal, cheap and easy ;) With -2 degrees of camber, the car will turn well and not wear out tires easily. I think his Mini is no more than 2600#, which isn't heavy. - AB

yeah, its got the sunroof though which adds about 85 pounds if I'm not mistaken, so its more like 2700, although stock curb weight (2620 according to Road and Track) is with the 17" wheels which are absolute anchors (27 lbs a piece!) Going to the 12.8 lb 15" wheels instead of stock would be cutting almost 60 lbs off the car, all rotating mass! Heck, her street wheels (with the runflats on them) made a huge difference in acceleration, even being 17"ers still (they are 14.3 lb 17" wheels though).

As far as camber goes, excuse my ignorance, but I'd only want added negative camber in the FRONT correct? Won't -2 wear tires bad on the inside edges in normal street driving, this is a daily driver remember? I don't think camber plates/bolts are coming anytime soon in the future, that is unless one of the front upper strut mounts cracks like they are notorious to do on mini's. . .

You can run -2.5* of camber all around and not affect tire wear. I'm pushing -3* in the rear of the Miata with no wear issues. Negative camber doesn't kill tires, toe does.

Camber bolts are a lot cheaper than a new set of tires, or even paying to have them flipped.

I run -1.8 in the rear of my Miata, and with those being non-turning drive wheels, I think the wear would be worse than -2 front or rear on a front drive car. I find any inner wear is just enough to offset the outer edge wear typical of a 'spirited' driving experience. I do, however, rotate at every Auto-X when I put the street Azenis back on the car.
