Hey all -

I'd like to set something up for a "Family Area" at Sanford this weekend so that those of us with young children can park together and help each other out. I have been discussing this with the officers and staff, and we'd like to keep this relatively informal right now to avoid club liability, etc.

Here's what we're gonna do, for this event at least:

SIGNUP

- If you are bringing small children that need constant supervision to Sanford, and if you want to park with the other families, sign up by posting here
- Please list your kids names and what "stuff" you're bringing that can be used by all (EZup, wagon, enclosed trailer, etc)

VOLUNTEERS

- I need one volunteer family who knows they will be getting there early to go borrow some cones from the bus and "cone off" an area large enough for everyone. Work with the event chairs to select the best spot -- at some sites we can use a large grassy area. The officers request that we don't set up right at the front of grid -- back a ways would be preferred for several reasons.

- I would like 4 people -- one per heat -- to volunteer to be "permanently" available in the area. I'm confident that there will be plenty more than this, but this is just in case.

GROUNDRULES

- Only "rule" I would like to establish is that -- if you are leaving your young child, you must "hand off" to someone specifically.

Hopefully this will work out ok and encourage other people to make autocrossing a more family friendly event. At this event, (and with short notice), I expect that we will just have the handful of "regulars" and no really new people -- we'll just have to think about how to accomodate newer people that we may not know well.

We will be there.

Kids:

We will bring:
EZ-up
a couple of kids chairs

We will be arriving early as we are taking the first shift at the gate. I will try to get an area set up.

I'll be getting there a smidge earlier than Adam. LMK how many families are attending, and I'll cone off an area so that you can park side by side on the outfield side near a portapotty.

Thanks Wes. I'll wait until tomorrow to see how many people reply here.

This is a great idea! Thanks for taking the lead on this. I will not have any kids with me at Sanford but have 4 small ones under eight and appreciate the chance to see autocross be family friendly. I hope to be there early and would be glad to help if I can.

Thanks,

Jim Herman

Adam,

Which gate are you talking about? I'm working 1st shift gate for entry/waiver sign-up and want to make sure you're not talking about the same thing.

Chris, they have decided (in another thread here on the forum) to open the gates 30 minutes early (7am). We have volunteered to 'man the gate' during this time period. I think you have the 7:30 shift... right?

Mike,
We plan to be there and bring Kelly. We have a tarp, blanket and kiddie chair. We also have an ez-up, but don't usually bring it. We can certainly bring it this time if there is a need.

The Kiddie Corral has been set up in the pits. It is designated by two cone walls; those arriving first, please set up camp there. Anybody caught doing anything close to speeding around the KC will be booted from the event right then and there, no questions asked.

Well I think the Kiddie Corral was a success yesterday. It was great to see so many kids out at the event! Nathan had a great time watching Mommy race. The comments from the other families have been quite favorable too. Many thanks to the Breakey clan for watching Nathan for us so many times -- feels like we didn't do enough in return.

This first attempt was very informal, but as Chris P said in an email to me "it's a good idea whose time has come". I will keep organizing things for now for the rest of the events this year, and maybe each event we'll experiment with some changes. Any comments about things to try? At the very least let's keep parking together -- next time I might want to see if we can try some different parking arrangements to make more of a circle or central hang-out area with easier access to our stuff. Walking across/around a half-dozen trailers to get something was a little inconvenient.

Wes - thanks for helping set up the area for us. The location worked out great.
