Miles,

If you want a "real" street tire you might consider these:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... +Wide+Oval

For us old guys, the Wide Oval brand is a name from the past! It used to be used on the bias belted 70 series tires in the late 1960's. My 1969 Mustang GT would have come on that type of tire if I hadn't upgraded to BFGoodrich radials which were a factory option.

I just put a set on my 01 Mustang GT (whimpy 245/45X17's  ) based on TireRack tests, etc. They appear to be a rebranded and somewhat lower priced version of Bridgestone RE-750's. They have actual tread grooves which is nice for the rain. Grip on the street seems a LOT better than my 5 year old GY Gatorbacks, especially in the wet but also in the dry.

The steering response is VERY much like R tires from the early 90's. Very crisp and a tendency to follow grooves, etc. in the pavement which to me is an indicator of a good stiff construction. Ride is fine and noise level is much lower than with the Gatorbacks. Even on all the concrete on my new commute to Cary via I-40 and Rt. 1.

As I recall the tested dry traction was comparable or better than almost all the tires Tire Rack compared them, or the RE-750's, to. Wet traction was even better compared to other choices. Ditto for steering response. Treadwear rating is 320 which is amazing given the apparent performance level. Wonders of modern chemistry I guess.

Given the nature of most THSCC courses and sites (transition intensive) whatever you get probably should score very well in steering response.

Dick

True, it could be a typo in the name. (Discount Tire Direct is an online store only, the local stores are called Discount Tire.)

Actually it's Tires.com. That's Discount online distribution operation. I got my 615's a few weeks ago and Edgeracing.com was $20 per tire cheaper than Tires.com.

If you go to Tires.com then you are redirected to Discounttire.com. That isn't the warehouse. You get less tire options to choose from.

Go to Discounttiredirect.com and you are now ordering from the warehouse and get the full selection of tires available. And you get a better price on the same tires!

I got a set of those to Dick! Put them on the Z06 for daily driving and will probably be my wet track tire. I'm saving the F1 Supercars for dry track time. I agree with your comments on the tires. Very happy with them so far.

Miles you can get the RT615 at a pretty good price if you stick with the 275/40-17 all around. So you can rotate them as needed. Then again for a few bucks more you could get some Nitto RII and drive on them to events. They wear pretty good. I vaguely remember one of your competitors ran on them and didn't do too badly

Opportunity to voice opinion on V710 tire size shortcomings.

They already seem to have my size covered in the posts (I'm running 245/45-16 in the Hoosiers), and anyway I'm not a member of that club these days (believe it or not, given my history). I could see giving national SCCA Solo II a shot if either Kit or I get good enough with a big enough budget to do it, but neither of us are there yet. Personally I'd rather see Hoosier come out with a tire to beat the V710... 8)

BTW i am running my ragged michelins from last year. with two new ones for rotation. the new Azeni's don't fit my car either.

Steve, I assure you... you've nothing to fear from me. I don't expect to make it to many events and I don't remember how to drive on street tires... if I even remember how to drive at all. I think your trophies are quite safe. :)

But I hope to get to come play and visit with all my great friends at THSCC once in awhile...

Cool. Now I know not to get a false sense of security in the morning when I'm only a few seconds behind you, then. :D

I gather the V710's are worth a good bit over the A3S05's and last longer, too. I love the feel of the Hoosiers (including the "skating" feeling when they're working right that Hoosier warns about), but I am resigned to them not lasting the season. So I might end up switching to V710's at some point, although ancient brand loyalty leaves me inclined to wait to see what Hoosier's 06 tire is like. But I didn't see the V710's in anything but 225/50 that would fit on the 16x8...?

I have 265/45/16 V710's mounted on the 16x8 GTA wheels and 275/45/16 S04's mounted on the 16x8 GTA wheels. You are giving up a lot of tire to me. I have the FK-451 245/45/16's for track use. What a difference when stacked to the V710's.

By the way, I am pretty impressed by the FK-451's on street and track. I did run them at a couple of AX's. But it is hard to judge their performance. I just got the car and the Auburn was shot.

Miles did not state that money is an issue (but it is with most of us), but I would rather save $60 a tire and go with the HTZ's.

I used unshaved Falken FK-451 last year in STS and was very happy with them (won my class). I went with the 451 as the RT-615 was not out in 16" at that time. However, I do have RT-615 on order this year. Should show up any day now.

i can not say enough about the 451 as a track tire. any weather condition. put a little heat in them and they grip with predictability. and i was talking to a guy with an M3 this weekend who said he can't seem to wear his out.

They do wear out. You just have to try... :D

2 Evo schools (phase 1 and 2)
1 Tarheel school (novice for wife)
6 Tarheel Autocrosses with about 1/2 being a two driver car
Daily driven all spring, summer and fall last year.

I was down to cord on one tire after last event. I think they are the best bang for the buck autocross/daily tire.

Hm. The V710's in that size spec a minimum wheel width of 8.5" rather than 8". I guess that's just a guideline rather than a rule, eh? I decided to be fairly conservative in width and stick to a size firmly in the middle of my rim width. Next time I'll know better. :)

Bridgestone has announced two new 140 WR tires aimed directly at the STS crowd needing larger tires. Have to wait to see if anyone jumps.

My OE tires are Bridgestone RE070's with a WR of 140. Great tire. I'd like to see that they have something similar in a wider width. Do you have a link to pass along?
