So for those of that don't know, Dan and I are taking over Novice Coordinator responsibilities next year. We will try our best to do as well and Rob and Graham did last year. Thanks to all of YOU, we had a very enjoyable time last year and we want to pass that on to other n00bs :D . One thing that helped us a lot last year was the willingness of club members to help out and answer questions, so we want to keep the Mentor program alive.

We need people to volunteer to be a mentor, I want to get this rolling now so that we will be prepared and things will run smoother. Please let me know if you are interested, I know it takes time but I think it is a valuable program.

-Thanks!

If you want I can make you some buttons to identify the mentors like:

And of course the flip side.

haha perfect.

we're thinking about having name tags for novices (green) and for mentors (red). itd make coming up to strangers easier for the n00bs throughout the day if needed.

ha, now i can call people, noobs, yess.

I think minimum requirement for a mentor would simply to be to meet with a novice in the morning at the novice meeting, add anything me and PJ will forget during the meeting, let them ride with you on your first run, and then ride with them on their first run.

So it will only occupy the first half of the first heat in theory and then youre done! of course if wanted/needed and you'd like to, you can hang out w/ your n00b as much as you want. we'd also like you to keep wearing the nametag so novices know who to ask throughout the day if they have any.

So it won't be hard at all! come on, help us out.

Thanks muchly for the name tag idea! I personally couldn't cope with just walking up to people at random to ask for help, as I was told to.
(Lucky for me, I did get a ride with Rob at my first event.)

you can put me down for mentor help as well. I remember feeling pretty lost when I first started attending meets. Having someone to talk to and field questions was a great help. Hat's off to Mark Senior for seeing me through a shakey start!

So Simon, you going to set up the Subby with some color changing Christmas tree lights when you run? I have a power converter that may work for you....

Trying to decide what color my next car should be. Then I thought, why not all colors?

I will not be able to make every event, but I will be a mentor for the events that I do attend.

PJ and Dan,

I'm glad to see the mentor program continue this year. I hope it grows and makes things better for our 1st time autocrossers especially.

I may only make a few events this year, but if you see me signed up, I'm happy to serve as a mentor.

It would be great if you were able to put us in contact with the novice a week or so ahead of the event. This would allow some communication to take place to help 1st timers prepare ahead of time. Every one may not want to do this, but I would take advantage of the opportunity if offered.

Since so many newcomers are reluctant to ask for help, I wish we could make it mandatory that all novices with two (or three?) events or less had to have an experienced autocrosser with them for their first two runs of the day. It would be optional for the afternoon runs. It certainly should be implemented for 1st timers. I don't know how often it happens now, but I know I've seen 1st timers at our events in the past who didn't want an instructor to help them and went out on their own at their first event. Maybe that doesn't happen today?

I hate to see people DNF two or three runs in a row and go home confused. I know there will be too much opposition to that idea to make it fly, but it's just a thought.

Miles

I completely agree with you Miles. Carl(Emmie probly helped too) set me up so that I can see which novices are attening easily. I plan on emailing them some pre-event info and tell them who their mentor is. Thanks to everyone that is Volunteering!
