Hmm, cat's out of the bag now.

Answers: Currently we are planning to elimintate PayPal as an option for autocrosses.

As for the final details of payment, etc, that is still TBD. The first event isn't planned before mid-late February, so I think we'll all have time to adjust :)

My gut feeling is that payment = cash/check. Yeah, I know it's old fashioned, but it's pretty damn reliable!

I should also add...

If you don't want to wait in line at the bus, then make sure to buy a season pass!

I think, in the end, things will be MANY times more simplified.

Honestly, too much time has been spent by the registrars and officers dealing with Pay Pal problems. I dont remember an event this year that didnt have SOME Pay Pal snafu.

Also, the season pass deal should be sweetened quite a bit. Stay tuned

What were/are the issues with paypal? Are there other forms of online payment?

How many people bought season passes last year, maybe 10-15? How many people used paypal on average for an event, 50-70? That is a feature that really made registration go smoothly. Who ever came up with the idea to ost the paypal people and haveus sign off was a genius.

You might want to ask the registrar about that one!

As a former officer, I'm sure that Jim understands that we *do* filter a lot of crap so the general membership only sees the happy side of things.

It never hurts to share with the membership issues that you have with PayPal and the impact that is has had on the registar and officers. Knowledge is a good thing :-)

The question I have is there an issue with us getting our money? Are the issues related to PayPal or online payment in general.

The problem that is brandied about the most is the "refund" issue. I am sure there are other problems or the decision would not have been made.

Honestly, its not a problem with Pay Pal, per se, except for the almost $500 in fees, which are to be expected to use their service.

The problem lies in a couple areas.

A- People dont use it like they are supposed to.
They pay for an event 2 months in advance by not using the icon on the registration page. By doing this they dont show up on the paid list. This happened a few times.

B- Refunds, carryovers and I paid and you dont have me listed. Pretty self explanatory.

I dont personally have a problem, but it got real old dealing with the constant problems with Pay Pal.

At what price point would you purchase a season pass? 1, 8 Event year is $160 for a member. Would a $135 season pass that took care of your registration for the YEAR be worthwhile?

Honestly, looking at the Pay Pal roster at events, it seemed that only 20-25% of entrants used it.

But the lingering question is:: Can I paypal for my season pass?

:)

Any possibility of looking at other online registration sites that will handle paying for events in advance by credit card and for that event only. Maybe one that provides an online list of paid entrants?

That $500 would almost pay for site rental and allow another event to be added to the schedule ;-)

I think the answer to this question depends heavily on how open a person's schedule is - in other words, how many of the eight events a person is confident he/she will make it to each season. At the start of each season, I have no idea which weekends will end up being committed for other things I can't wiggle out of. Although I always start out the season with full intentions of being at all eight events, I always seem to end up the season only able to make it to six events. So for me, it probably wouldn't be worth $135 for a season pass.

Another variable that would effect the season pass decision is how much hassle it would save to avoid paying for each event individually. For the past couple years it's been pretty painless, thanks to the PayPal option - not only eliminating the wait at the bus for those who used it, but also significantly benefitting those who chose not to use it (since the line at the bus has been essentially non-existent). If PayPal is going away, the return to long lines at the bus will increase the hassle involved with paying at each event, making the benefit of buying a season pass greater.

That doesn't solve the problem, of someone paying for the event, not showing, and a year later wanting credit for that event to be applied to the current event. (not a fictitous situation)

I'll chime in and say I see this as a nice feature lost, personally. While it probably won't make a difference in the end of how many events I do or don't go to, I also won't buy a season pass at any price since the national schedule and road racing precludes me from making a high enough percentage of THSCC events for it to be worthwhile to me. (The season pass is a great idea, I do admit.)

Since I generally work T&S it was darned nice to know before I got to an event when I'd be working (thanks to the email on that ahead of time) and being able to just check myself off on a list at the bus. Add to that the annual tech and you had what I considered the most easy system for an end user going.

Sure, I'm not a registrar so I don't see the problems there. If that's the way it has to be, so be it. The officers in this club do a *whole* lot so if this is the way they say it's gotta be, then I'm not going to beat a dead horse. Nope, no dead horse beating for me. I won't even hit it. Not once. Or twice. Since it's dead, there's no reason to. Wouldn't think of it. :)

I too will miss pay pal - it's been nice to not have to stand in line at the bus. I'm also in two minds on the benefits of the season pass.

How about I buy 4 or 6 or 8 credits in advance and then just notify registration at the bus that I'm using a credit on any particular event. I know: another duty for the poor folk in the bus. But it might give us the benefit of a prepay option without the downside of paypal for the club.
