Go easy on the course workers. Give it try sometime :) At Sanford and Laurinburg you may only have 2-3 seconds to pick up the car number. Plus, you can not see the number of the car starting. The car is usually coming straight at the worker and the only time the numberis visible is when it flashes by. Add to the fact, there are usually only one worker per station...we had to spread out ...it is pretty tough sometimes.

A special thanks to Sally with the 4th run group. We had 12 people covering the course and she was very polite and understanding when the number was missed. Usually on the second or third run you can remember the numbers associated with some of the cars.

With all the T&S folks and fancy computers and software and grid lines, y'all have a lot better idea of who is on course than the poor person standing out there and getting to see the number flash by while trying to watch the cones in a 20 - 25 yard area.

Plus if you're they guy with the radio you don't want to call a penalty until the cone chaser has indicated it should be called, meanwhile another car is bearing down on you knocking the previous car number out of your memory. BTDT.
I can tell you what they do at nationals, for what it's worth. The radio person is equiped with a clipboard and log sheet with a column for car# and class, clean, cone, dnf. You log the car# class as soon as the car passes, then indicate what if any penalty was accured and then radio it in.
Every car is logged so if you must wait to verify a penalty it's easy to look and see what car passed you last to know who to call it on.

In regard to cone call "challenges", in addition to the ones already mentioned. Another issue is that there is no point in trying to call the cone while a LOUD car is still close to the worker. By the time I could have a chance at actually being heard I had forgotten the car number if I had even seen it.

During Heat 2 the person at the other end of the radio did a GREAT job of covering for my "no car number" calls from Station 1.

By the way, if we drivers didn't hit so many cones this problem wouldn't exist . . . says the guy who coned away a season championship for the first time in his career.

I'm looking forward to the radar timing results. Stephen/Michael: if my handwriting is illegible fax me the first two sheets (if you have them in order) and I'll see if I can decipher what I wrote for you.

During the time that I was 'gunning' ******* driving the ******* had the fastest time. Oh, sorry, I can't give that away :)

Hey Walter - what's a a smaller, lower horsepower import? CRX? M3? Anything except a 400 HP Chevy?

And did you see what had FTD yesterday? A 400 HP Chevy. I don't consider my M3 to be a svelte car either at 3200+ lb and 240 HP. And it beat ALL of the Miatas and CRXes out there :)

Guess I don't quite get your point... Sure, like Ryan said, courses could be made to MORE favor smaller cars or MORE favor HP cars. What you see is a balance, but it's a balance at which just about everything out there, if driven properly, can do really, really well. Autocross is a great car equalizer.

My torqueless RX-8 was the fastest at 48 mph. Not bad considering people say the RX-8 is gutless. - AB

405hp purpose built. autox is what it is. no getting around it. mental, exceedingly technique based, and not too frickin easy for quite a few people. Walter, i say build and build and build on that Camaro. because after all, for some of us, that is half the fun. 8)

Yup, if you pull up to the line and you think your beat, you are. Its just like you drive where you look.

Let me go and get my digs in here.....

First, let me say "thanks to everyone" that helped setup the course layout. This was a great example of too many cooks not spoiling the soup! While I was fussing over the first part of the course with Aaron, Jim, Ryan and others were laying out the back. Once I rode on the course I liked the flow. It's good to hear such positive feedback considering this was my rookie event.

Also, another great big "THANKS" to everyone! This was stated earlier, but 5 runs w/ fun runs?? This was great!! Just goes to show how supportive everyone is in this club to lend a hand to make sure all ran smoothly :redcool:

I have to admit I was looking for something different here.... I liked Jim's S sweeper in the back. Keep your cool and your good to go. Push for time and you’re done. Control, control, control. I really would like to see more “out of the box” designs like this at the next events. As for the front off set slalom, that was a direct rip off from the nationals that Chuck showed me…hadn’t seen it before and I thought is was a nice element.

Aaron, Jim, Ryan and everyone else was a great help in showing me the ropes. If you haven’t chaired an event, please consider running one…great fun…but a lot of work I came to find out. The reward is you have the final say so on the setup and it’s always fun to see what someone else will come up.

Chris, you asked about the radar times. I have the “raw” sheets and I’m entering them into an excel spread sheet now so I can send them to the Fishers to post. I should wrap it up tomorrow, so look for it in the next few days. Since I’m going to sort the spread sheet to group cars, your times shown will NOT be in the order of your runs, but a sort from how excel sorts them.

My final thought? I’m pleased with the outcome of this event and I’ll sign up again to chair another one next year. Elitist bastards rule :toast:

I truely had a blast at this event. Hats off to the course designers and to Jim for the humbling "S" section that I messed up 5 for 5. I really enjoyed the course partially due to the fact that it was very slalom intensive. Also, I think it was a great design because it was easier than most airport courses to breakdown into sections, which aided in memorization.

Not a bad way to cord some Hoosiers with less than 40 runs on them.

I gotta admit I was grumbling a little at losing the "P" and the sweepers, but the decision Aaron made to shorten the course made for a really nice event with the low turnout we had. Bravo on making a potentially unpopular call.

I can also say that working Raw Sheets in heat 3 that I had about the easiest time in that post at any event I have done raw sheets at. Even with 3 cars on course and a lot of cone calls it was totally manageable. Zero timer errors, and only two cars with the wrong number/class to cause confusion. Grid audit and our oppresive car numbering requirements are working. There were only 3 hold-starts I remember which were due to the course needing to be picked up -- resulting in only one red flag and 5 total reruns. And there were probably only 10 or so cone calls that the workers forgot/couldn't see the number. That's a pretty efficient heat, and why we finished at 2:45pm! It also helped to be able to see 5+ cars on the start line, see the start clearly, and be able to (just barely) make out car numbers at the finish.

Thanks to everyone who stepped up!
