This is my first year in this club and just over two autocrossing, so my opinion may not be as valuable as others who have done this for years.
I run in the class that is appropriate for the mods on my car. When it was an ESP car, I ran ESP. It is a SM car now and that's what I run. Mike W. could have easily lied about the engine swap and not had to run SM. I respect him for that and hope Konis and tires help him next year.
In the opposite vein, I resent someone who changes classes to trophy when they actually fit in another class. While within the rules, I do not think it honorable.
I wish we would have a "Gentleman's Agreement" (no sexism intended!) to run in the highest class appropriate for your car. I think Art was the only person in ESP at Sanford. I respect him for not taking advantage of less experienced people and jumping up to SM.
I totally agree, hence this post.
I still have the ability to run STU by myself, and if I choose to do so, I will be bumped if I am the only person in the class. So, essentially, I will be bumped into the next highest class for my car which will be ESP (BSP next year).
So, I am giving myself a choice where I will do the 'least' damage. Also, I am sharing that with the rest of the competitors in my club. I think that is about as honorable of a thing that you can do
Looking at the standings, it will affect ESP THE LEAST as no one has a chance to catch first, but in PRO, I could totally affect 2nd -- 5th.
I will let the diatribe continue, but if all else fails, I will just run STU, and bump to ESP.
Thanks for your input, gentlemen (and maybe ladies).
