Like I said in the other thread:

Quote:
One thing I do not miss about THSCC is autocrossing in Eastern NC in July and August. You guys can totally have that crap. I did that for too many years and burned up too many brain cells. I'll stick to the Asheville night series events during the summer. The first one in late May??? You needed long pants and a jacket.

Of course, it was 99 degrees on my deck here in western NC on Sunday, so it was just a hot damn day everywhere. Good day to stay home and watch F1 on Speed, which I did.....

I think it was 3-4 years ago at Laurinburg we had a guy suffer exactly what Stephen experienced. But this was in April!

I chaired that event with Bowie Jr. Regardless that it was April, it was stooopid hot. The EMS crew visited us twice that day.

Matt<---just turned 33 and already too old for that s#it.....

FWIW, Dick's had adidas soccer and running gear at 25% off on Saturday. There was also an "off" brand that was offering 2 shirts for $25 too. I just might pick up a spare later this week.

Does anyone know a good/trusted place to buy coolmax t-shirts? I checked online at REI and Dick's and they both dont seem to offer regular t-shirts. I saw some online at other sites, though it is a little hard to judge if the shop is reputable or not?

Thanks,

John

Also I saw someone else here on the THSCC boards post about running all you runs at once and not having to run in two seperate heats during the day. I find it tough to setup, run then work and die from the heat only to have to run again after I just worked. I have run some NASA Autocross events that you run all you runs in one heat and then work one other heat. To me it seems to cut down on the fatigue a bit.

i think i learned my lesson too.

i was fine out there all day saturday, but i drank a lot more water i think. i had a small headache saturday and it was on and off through sunday. sunday i think i only drank 4-5 bottle because i was busy and foolishly thought id feel more thirsty than i did if i needed more. then around midday sunday it got worse so i took a couple advil and it was gone. i was ok all day untill we started changing wheels toward the end. then i got the worst freakin headache i think i ever had in the back of my head/base of my neck. i also felt really weak like i couldnt walk and nausious. i had to force myself to drink because i thought i was going to puke.

but then some guys sat me down in front of the big fan w/ some gatorade and water and some more advil and i started feeling better. but then i got up and felt sick and dizzy again so i went and sat in my car w/ more water and the A/C on. hah that was cure and after a 15min nap i felt like a whole new person.

thanks to Jason, Chris and some others who helped me out w/ the chair and fan and gatorade. Scott for loading up my wheels, and definatley to PJ for finishing changing my wheels for me. great ppl. sorry i'm a weinie

oh yeh, and i got attacked by fire ants at station 4 sat night and my ankle was pretty swollen up and oozing and gross. thanks to Christine for the benadril :)

lessons i learned: headaches mean things, dont cover them up w/ advil. drink more water even if you dont think you need to, and watch where you stand

:)

Another heat related issue that I've been wondering about is heat related headaches. If possible, I'd like to take preventitive measures rather than popping tylenol all day. Does anybody know what causes them (other than being hot)?

That's what my problem was yesterday. Hence the reason why I left early. Looks like I'll be shooting for the hydrate before and continue through the event this weekend like Vincent to see if I can battle the headaches before they happen.

It's also important not ot just drink water when you are sweating that much, I don't care for all the sugar in Gatoraide, but you *need* to put the electrolytes back into the body.

I know it's weird, but I hate the taste (or lack thereof) of water. So I drank a ton of Gatorade all day long. I started feeling a little weary after my first two runs and quickly got into the shade and in front of a fan. I sat down, drank even more, ate, then rested until my afternoon runs. Had I not recognized it when I did I could have been in the same boat as Stephen.

I think all of Ron's preaching about hydration at the HPDE events has sunken in with me. I now drink even when I'm not thirsty even during the cool months at VIR.

BTW, I thought of this when I got home yesterday. I drank a TON of Gatorade, but I NEVER had to use the bathroom ALL DAY yesterday. All of that fluid must have been used by my body for something it needed!

I have heard that you don't want to just drink "sports drinks" because they will actually sap your body of necessary minerals. Social marathon runners have ended up in a coma from overdrinking sports drinks. If you don't like the taste of water, try the 50-50 mixture to avoid drainage

In my experience, pre-hydration is the key to avoiding de-hydration. No matter what you drink, if you don't do it in advance of being out in the sun and getting hot, you run the risk of heat stroke. Drink early and often.

Places to find Coolmax or breathable t-shirts...

I've got mine at Dick's, REI, roadrunnersports.com (they have a wide variety of types and brands), and from underarmour.com.

Classic quote from the Captian: "If you haven't started drinking, start drinking now!"

As my personal rule of thumb, if I'm heading to the bathroom every 30 minutes (just prior to and immediately after getting into/out of a car), I'm in good shape.

Just a short note to everyone, from my Marine Corp Desert training
If you have a headache, drink more water
If your not urinating, drink more water
If your urine is yellow, drink more water
If your unine is dark yellow or orange in color, drink a whole lot more water.

Sometimes I don't do the things I know I should do. I didn't drink enough yesterday had a headache.

To cool down place ice or cold soaked towels on:
your head
your neck on or near your jugular and carotid arteries
under your arm pits
in your crotch

Do Not remove your shirt in an effort to cooldown this will alow your body to lose more fluids and allow the sun to have a greater heating effect on your skin...

I too started to succumb to the heat. Changing tires yesterday SUCKED!!!! I got head pounding (no headache) and some chest tighness after 3 tires. Cooled down in the bathroom for a while and doused myself with water. Continued packing the car with numerous breaks.Drank 64 oz of H2O on the way home in AC comfort, Ahhhhh. Crashed at home with a hard 30 min nap, couldn't stay awake.

The last few events I have been spending all week prior trying to decide whether to tow the car or not. I will say that I am glad that I decided to drive the car and change tires yesterday instead of towing. Why? Because after yesterday's experience I will never, ever have that debate again :) BS Trailer Queen, here I come!

I discovered the complete solution to this almost exactly 2 years ago... Move to New England. They think a 90* day is autocross weather from hell. I think it's great that I don't have to take a 24 pack of something to the autox.

Of course the trade off is having to own a snowblower to get out of your driveway in the wintertime, but you can't have it all.

Diane ~ who remembers the guy at Laurinburg several years ago.

Or run ST* and drive to/from on the same tires you autocross on. :)

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.
