Just for fun I tried running only 1st gear from the start to the Chicago box. Banged the rev limiter 3 times from the kink to the box. Decided that wasn't a good idea. 2nd gear right after the kink and no more shifting works fine. Never hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear. Not even close. Only hit the rev limiter in 2nd once this year at Laurinburg. Came close at Danville on that big sweeper but lost traction before I hit red line...

How fast will the Z06 go in 2nd gear?

I haven't field tested the numbers and I don't look at my speedometer at autocross. The math based on the Z06 trans and rear tire sizes is Gear=MPH@RPM :

1st=49@6407
2nd=71@6471
3rd=103@6485
4th=147@6472

On your C5 you should be in roughly the same ballpark. Slightly taller trans gears, taller tires, but lower redline.

1st=52@5975
2nd=78@5998
3rd=106@5953
4th=138@5962

Regarding the whole discussion about umbrellas, canopies, etc. at worker stations....

We want course workers to be free to move quickly without any obstructions in the way, in the event an errant car comes their way. We also want course workers to feel free to shift their position as needed if they feel the worker position was not in an ideal spot.

The club generally has the goals (as furthered by officers like Mike Whitney in the past) of keeping set up and tear down as simple as possible... and also minimizing the amount of stuff we have to carry in the bus.

Adding canopies to worker stations conflicts with all of the above.

And it isn't really needed. Golf umbrellas, or umbrellas of almost any usable size, will accomplish most of the same thing. The disadvantage of course is that you have to hold it for your worker shift.

I don't think the club officers needs to take it on themselves to buy golf umbrellas for worker sites. We could, and perhaps should, encourage people to bring umbrellas for shade on super hot days. Some people just don't want the umbrella as a solution. There are other ways to accomplish similar goals- ranging from oversized straw hats to wet towels over the top of your head... we shouldn't mandate something like this but simply to inform, encourage and educate folks on the issues and proper courses of action to stay cool.

My .02 worth,

Miles

Amen. What's next... everyone will be standing in line to have somebody put sunscreen on them? :lol:

(I got sunburned myself last weekend, but it's not the club's fault... it's my wife's! :wink: )

We should get Hawaiian Tropic & Hooters to sponsor the next event for sunblock and chicken wings. :D

One restriction that should be placed on umbrellas out at worker stations is that they can contain no RED!

Please don't make that a requirement. My umbrella has one or two red panels. However, I try hard to not "wave" the umbrella at on coming drivers. Plus, what driver actually sees even a red flag unless it is waved right in front of the car . . . :lol:

Heck Dick, I'll buy you a new umbrella for a season of in-car instruction! :mrgreen:

Hey, yeah, no red. I think they should all be light blue with a club-related emblem on 'em. :wink:

What's yout speed in 2nd on the limiter?

I didn't look at my speedo at the time and haven't checked it otherwise, but I know it's definitely below 60 mph, and I'd bet well below. (STi's are among the few cars that requires going to 3rd gear for the 0-60 test.)

At least I have something to feel superior about, despite losing to my ESPX and ESPN non-competitors. (Thank you both for finding another class to run in while the Meltons and I pretend you don't exist.) My 2nd gear tops out at 78 mph at 5900 rpm on 245/45-16 Victoracers. I doubt I got ALL the way up to that speed before the Chicago box, but if I did, then you could easily forgive me for locking up a tire under braking. :)
