I keep offering to co-drive with Marcus or Brian, but apparently they're too skeered. :P

I never did get used to the amount of grip the R32 had; I kept braking too early and not getting on the gas soon enough because I'm so used to street tires. Oh, and running the whole course one time with the parking brake on didn't help either. Lots of fun, though.

I think you should co-drive Keith's STi. That would be a better test of skillz.

What's yout speed in 2nd on the limiter?

I didn't look at my speedo at the time and haven't checked it otherwise, but I know it's definitely below 60 mph, and I'd bet well below. (STi's are among the few cars that requires going to 3rd gear for the 0-60 test.)

I glanced down once during a run on the limiter in second...56mph or so on 225/45/17's.

Thanks for checking, Chris.

BTW, I have verified speedo error on my STi w/stock (225/45/17) tires, and it read 5% faster than actual speed. So, on stock tires, our actual speed is more like 53 mph at 2nd gear rev limit. On Sunday I was on larger tires (245/45/17) for improved gearing, but that only gets me to about 54-55 mph at the rev limiter in 2nd gear, assuming I calculated correctly.

Unfortunately, I really needed about 60 mph before the braking zone going into the Chicago box.

60??? Try 64 (3rd - corrected)!!! ;D

Obviously, speed into that box does not a fast time make. Doesn't matter if you lose all the speed in time it takes to heel toe and you brake too much in the sweeper :(

- brian

Well, with my 225/50/15 race tires, I should be ~63 at the top of 2nd. I don't know if I ever actually hit the rev limiter, but if not, I was right on the verge at that braking point for the C-box and do believe I got at least one pop on a couple runs. So I guess my supercharger is working, :D since I'm nearly as fast as an STI in what was essentially a drag race, not too bad considering I have no AWD launching advantage. The car still surprises me at times at just how fast the little sucker builds speed. Not too bad for a Miatarrr...

I want to echo everyone's kudo's for the Event in Greenville. I love being able to get up at a normal time to get to an event in Greenville! My only question/suggestion-what would any body think about the club buying those little tent things to use for work stations? Would that inhibit the workers? I was really worried about someone getting heat stroke sunday(the insurance agent in me always comes out).

The courses were great ! I was really slow but I guess I am still learning.

This was mentioned at the event as well. I think it's a good idea, but there are a few issues with the tents.

Storage
Putting them up
Keeping them from blowing away
Taking them down

With the tire and the gear ratio I got, 2nd gear is 54mph at the rev limiter. I didn't have to think about it and just went for 3rd gear
and downshifted to 2nd when braking for the box. The rest of the course was in 2nd but even there after the slalom I hit the rev
limiter. I'm really thinking about changing the final gear ratio. The newer tranny same type than mine had a longer final drive.
That will also help on the track, 5th gear is too short for VIR and Road Atlanta. With that higher ratio same tire size 2nd would be
62 instead of 54 and 5th will be 149 instead of 130. I will loose a little bit under acceleration but a shift to 3rd will not be required for
the 0-60 and a shift to 5th will not be required for the 1/4 mile. That will probably be the next winter project.

For immediate action, since the worker-station tents have some unresolved drawbacks, how about we try buying a few club "golf" umbrellas first. They'd be a lot easier to store, cheaper to buy, & they can move out of an errant drive line with the worker if necessary. :) They could be made available with the radios as the workers goes out to work & should be returned to that same location after the event/worker's shift.

I can't remember who I was talking to on Sun about how hot it was at the worker stations, but he said it wasn't much different from being in the shade of the building with the big umbrella he used.

Glad someone has mentioned this. Bernie and I talked about it a lot Sunday evening after Steven got sick. I don't know what the (1) storage limitations are, but our shade tent folds up into a very managable package. (2) They are sooooo easy to put up and take down I can do it by myself if necessary, so first workers out-put them up-last workers out-take them down. (3) Most come with 12" stakes, but if the wind is blowing enough to blow them away, chances are the heat is not as terrible as Sunday. Hope someone will look into it. What do others think?

Jason and I always bring several big golf umbrellas to every event. This should be standard gear that people bring with them to an autocross. They are invaluable in the rain and the sun.

This is even mentioned in the novice event check list on our web. http://www.thscc.com/autocross/info/novicecklist.html

That was my canopy at station 5. We had so much shade with the building I put it out there while I was working and left it up for the rest of the day. :)

Dan and I were hitting the rev limiter for a while before the Chicago box, too. How fast is that, Dan?

stock wheel diameter (24.08") at stock limiter (6.5k) is ~58mph

i have a chip which raises the limiter to 7200 which w/ stock wheels at 7k is 62mph. but i have smaller diamater wheels (235/40/17 instead of 225/40/18) for autox which puts me at ~60mph at 7k. and i know i was above 7k at times, i swear i saw 7.5k and about shit. i hope GIAC knew what they were doing when they programmed this soft limiter

Just for fun I tried running only 1st gear from the start to the Chicago box. Banged the rev limiter 3 times from the kink to the box. Decided that wasn't a good idea. 2nd gear right after the kink and no more shifting works fine. Never hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear. Not even close. Only hit the rev limiter in 2nd once this year at Laurinburg. Came close at Danville on that big sweeper but lost traction before I hit red line...
