Muwhahahahah.... Eh... I could give input as to what I see and what I think about the car and how it needs to be driven, but I think Kevin Allen would be the best to get the most information about how to drive the car FAST and correctly.

If it is going to be a ride along with someone else driving your car, Kevin would be the guy I would choose.

Oh yea, and tell him you want a 'FAST & CLEAN' drive. Not a 'Test Drive'. Believe me -- there is a difference with him.

I'll abuse it - I mean drive it for you. :D

Brian is talking about Greenville last year, when I went from doing several runs in my 120whp 2.5RS with open front diff, no electronic gizmos & super-slow steering to doing a couple of runs in his 260whp STi with all kinds of electronic diff thingies & super-quick steering. It took about a run & a half to get the right foot & hands recalibrated. With the 2.5RS you just brake/turn/floor it. Doesn't work the same way with an STi.

If you can attend an Evolution school, you get a chance to ride along with some of the very best drivers in the country as they show you what your car can do. For Phase 1 and 2, they only take it 80%.

I had the good fortune to have Pat Salerno as my instructor and competitor in the Evolution Extreme Challenge school....awesome baby.

^^great, wanna give it a spin at the next event? how would that work? i assume the run wouldnt count.. would we have to wait for a fun run opportunity?

^hrmm that sounds really beneficial, too, i'll look into it

Really the only way to do it is to have somebody ride along with you (preferably at a school), then have them drive the car so that they emphasize what you're doing wrong (by doing it right! ) - not necessarily to show you what the car can do. Tom Hoppe did that for me at my first school, and it was one of those "oh... I see... " sort of things. Don't expect instant results once you've been shown, though. It takes lots of practice to finally get it right.

Also, it's not so much about driving techniques for AWD vs. for whatever else when you're a novice; it's more about knowing where to go fast vs. where to go slow. Any of the faster guys can show you that. Once you get pretty good at knowing what to do with the course, that's when you can concentrate on getting 100% out of the car.

We haven't been doing too many fun runs this year for some reason, but if you plan to come to the Saturday evening event in Greenville, I'll give you rides in the WRX. And if you want a co-driver in the R32 on Sunday... 8)

I believe fun runs can be useful for much more than just "fun" or raising funds. They are a good training/introduction tool and/or an opportunity to try a setup or line change and therefore should be offered whenever possible.

I totally agree. I've had a few events where I had a quicker fun run time than official time. Granted, you can't be 100% sure that it's clean, but you can try different approaches without anything to lose.

Plus, every once in a while you can put others' cars through the paces.

Do you guys/gals do fun runs with your race tire$ still mounted?

Yes. The whole point of a fun run in your own car generally is to see what is possible that you didn't figure out during your official runs. Especially effective for drivers like me who usually don't hit cones on their timed runs (I know that doesn't apply to most Tarheel drivers but I started autocrossing where there was ONE official run so it better be clean).

Yup, then again I don't usually have any other tires at the events. This is also why the race tire people get a little more stingy about offering fun runs in their cars.
