Thanks to Kevin and Chris for a great event! I thought it was a really excellent course, once I got it down. When I was walking it I thought it was visually confusing, but it drove great! The fast sweeper into the "alley of cones" was my favorite feature! It was a classic "look ahead" course.

I've got to give Emmie the credit for the idea of doing the first turnaround counter-clockwise, but I saw very few people doing it. The folks Emmie and I told who tried it reported that they liked it. Did anyone else try it?

Thanks again guys!

Ditto for the awesome course. Carl, I did the turn-around "backwards" from everyone else and it was my quickest run before the cone smacking (+2). It seemed to save a little time but Lee pointed out a great point that the exit was a little tricky because it was narrower.

Anyhow, I had a great time. I think the sweeper at the beginning was the most enjoyable section.

I had fun, but something needs to be done about worker changes. I know this is not the forum to talk about it, but it does need to be addressed.

The course was well designed and challenging. - AB

I did it on my last run, and oddly enough Emmie was in the car with me. I liked it. It was more natural driving it then thinking about it, and I got into the sweeper and set up for the big gate easier than when I did it clockwise. It probably would have cut a bit of time off (among other of her helpful pointers) had not my upper intercooler hose split open on the turnaround at the far end of the runway.

When I was working station 1 in the first heat, I saw only 3 people try it. I think one of them was you.

I liked the course a lot, but it sure did generate a lot of radio chatter. "DNF, DNF, DNF..."

Great course! FYI I considered it to be a "medium speed" course (not counting the first gear turn around for which there is no alternative to at that site while having a decent course length). I found it to be a very easy course to follow . . . but riding as a passenger before my first run might have helped  . I stayed with the "popular" left to right line through the taxiway turnaround for a variety of reasons not the least of which was that there is NO WAY I would be able to see the cones over the hood of the Vette if I went the other way and there were at least a "zillion" of them on that side of the taxiway.

It was a great course, and I went ahead and did it both ways. I could get into it A LOT faster going CCW, but it WORKED better for my w/the popular CW direction as I could get out A LOT harder without having to worry about the brake marker cones.

The whole day was nice... kinda slow.. and a few gremlins. I am going to vote for a 'fast' course sometime soon. Talking with Miata drivers and hearing them say 'I only had to touch my brakes once in the slaloms.... yea... um.. yea... that is all. :)

I suspect that it depended on the car you were driving as to which direction might work best for you for the small turnaround. If in a small well turning car, CC probably worked well like stated. You could use the momentum going in and be able to keep a tighter line going out than other cars, while building back up speed. It seems like that would minimize real estate for the smaller car. The longer route would probably be slower.
In my car, it was better to go in clockwise and power out and build up to full throttle before the apex of the sweeper and carry speed all the way to the first strong offset making sure to get well behind the first right, so no braking until that first strong offset on the left.

There's also the slight consideration of "directional comfort"in a turnaround or pivot. :D

By the way Brian, I certainly enjoyed a spin in your car...it was great.

As far as the 'slaloms'...when I was smart about it I touched the brakes going in to set up...cause I was flying after the second turnaround and a tickle again at the chicago box. On my (what would have been fastest...the fish that got away) best run, until I saw dollar signs when faced with running down the timing equipment, I got through the chicago box with a toe lift but when I whipped it back to make the final offset the rear end came around, I caught it just in time to make a choice...A. Mow down the timing box. or B. Suck it up, and stop the car. So I just locked it up and came to a stop and backed up to clear the finish. Amazing how it adds many many seconds to your run if you have to stop and back up!

Either way it was a fun course and I enjoyed all the attention the Celi got coming back out. I must say though between the Chick's School on Saturday and the event yesterday I'm worn out. I have to go to work today to rest!

Speaking of the Chick's School...all of the girls were just great to work with. If I don't remember names when I see you please forgive me and I can't see you very well in your helmet!

Fun course! Fast with appropriate look ahead and it favored no particular run group. The results show that there was something for everyone...good job!!

I really like Danville as a site, and suggest using it more often even tho it requires a pivot turn, the big sweeper is an enjoyable feature we seldom are able to have. It's much closer than Laurenburg or Greenville and is seldom used for any events, Triad only uses it once or twice a season.

I was pretty surprised people even considered going CCW. Yes, you could carry a little more speed into it. But you had to brake even earlier to account for that extra speed. So you are covering more distance under braking.

By going CW, I was covering the same extra distance under acceleration. With only 114 hp and a passenger on every run... I have to really reduce distance.

We need to get away from these DNF, cone intensive courses. At this rate, we will need to buy all new cones for next season :) I felt this course favored higher horsepower cars. You had two long straights with nothing happening except to check the radio stations. The sweeper and the tight areas were all on the uphill section. So any lifting or braking really hurt the lower horsepower cars. IMO.

By the way, the FTS car is still for sale. Yes, FTS with corded front tires and passenger on all 4 runs ;) I will even toss in the corded front tires at no extra cost to you.

I debated all morning about it. By my count, I could come up with 3 good reason to go CCW, and 2 reasons to go CW. 3 > 2, so I made my decision.

BTW, the deciding reason was "more fun" :)

You = passenger and corded tire, Me = stock 84k mile shocks, unprepped car, and 280 TW Yokohama tires. You > me by 0.1 second :)

(I know, I know BS >> ES...)

Jim,

Two long straights? I'll check my GEEZ plots when I get a chance but for a "real car" instead of one with a terrible power to weight ratio there were NO long straights. I did actually get to keep my throttle foot planted for a second or two a couple of times. Wait till you start running the Firebird . . . :D

Dick (who believes a straight isn't long until MOST cars run out of revs in second gear before the braking zone  )

Too bad Eric coned out. There would be no FTS discussions :). - A B

Agreed. I was in a low HP car and I don't remember any "long straights". Maybe I wasn't doing it right? :?

Guess that is why we count cones :)
