Plane lands on car during Porsche club event

Quote:
Jul 6, 10:59 AM (ET)

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German pilot and driver escaped unhurt when a one-seater plane landed on top of a speeding car at a little-used airport, police in the western town of Bitburg said Wednesday.

"It was a miracle that no one was hurt. There was considerable damage done to the plane and the car," said Klaus Schnarrbach, spokesman for the Bitburg police.

The driver was racing at 160 kph (100 mph) with 11 other members of a local Porsche club at the airport, a former U.S. air base, when the single-engine plane accidentally landed on his roof. The shocked driver slammed on the brakes, sending the plane crashing to the ground.

"The airplane managed to stay steady on the roof at first," said Schnarrbach, adding the pilot faced possible charges of negligence. "They probably couldn't have done it that well if they had tried," he said.

Let's not forget that Mr Whitney almost had a plane land on him....

I bet that would've made that 325 sell a little slower!

Yeah, but we all know that Mike is too fast and he would have out run the plane, even on street tires. :P

BTW, what's the PAX index on a plane anyway?

About 15 years again I attended an autocross at Holloman AFB in Alamogordo, NM. The runways are so long there that we were using the far end of an active runway for the event and they had F-15's taking off from the other end of the runway. I remember working the course, looking up and seeing and an F-15 far off in the distance but headed right for me. He was airborne way before he got near us but it was still unnerving. Boy, you couldn't do that type of thing today!

We used to autocross on an active airport between Rich Square and Ahoskie. The tower would radio us that a plane was coming and the courseworkers would run out and pick up the cones in the runway.

It worked pretty well unless the pilot wanted to practice touch and goes. Then we had to wait.

On the bright side, there were not many cones on the runway parts of the course :D

I have found the perfect car for airport autocrossing.

Do you have to actually touch the cones with the car to get penalized for knocking them over?
