As I understand it, the issues with VMP and FedX as well as other venues is not the price, it's that the venues will not grant a guaranteed availability contract for the lots. They want the right to cancel right up to the last minute if they find someone willing to pay more for it. National headqtrs books the venues 6 or more months out, won't schedule an event and have 100's show up without a place to race. They've BTDT too many times already don't want another T-shirt.

You're not getting the full story, at least with FedEx. There are multiple rental rates available to the consumer. The cheapest involves the possibility of last minute cancelation. The rates go up as you want a longer guarantee for your date.

WDCSCCA often makes a buttload of money off their events because they have a great rep at running great events *and* they get open dates a month or so out so there is little chance of getting yanked. But I've not seen NUMBERS that say the higher locked in rates wouldn't work for national events. I'll bet this is the same scenario for VMP, too.

Wes, they don't really run "two" events. They just split the class run groups and work assignments such that depending on which class you are in you only have to be there half the day and you're done. Yes, they do get 300 competitors at many of their events, but that's still about the same or less than what a National Tour draws. In fact, I think the NT up there last year was almost 400. *shrug*

I was aware of that, but SCCA can't wait until a month out to book a national event, they want/need a locked date at least 6 mo. out for obvious reasons, but Fed EX won't give that for summer weekend dates unless you're willing to pay for the entire stadium. I don't think too many of the 400 competitors would be willing to cover that expense: $1mill/400=25K per competitor, nah don't think it's in my racing budget...

I sent an email to Steve Johnson pres of SCCA about this possible AX site.
I got a reply yesterday that he would pass the info on to their newly formed site aquisition committee and their area director to lend support.
SCCA could really use a permanent available site here for national events that would be central to the E. US. They have lost the use of VMP and Fed Ex, and Michelin has stopped making the black lake available for AX. The next closest venue is Toledo OH. (Atl is a stop gap that is really too small)

Michelin probably stopped letting AX use the Black Lake site so they can test how well their F1 tires work on banked racetracks.

That's probably the problem, the course around the black lake is flat!
They were building more test courses across the street the last time we were there.
seriously I heard new management decided that since no AXer would be caught dead running M.'s there was nothing in it for them to allow axing there.
