What did you think about the Test and Tune course configuration we used in February?
I really liked it and would love to see us run that configuration again. (at least once more) 32%  32%  [ 12 ]
I really didn't like it. Let's don't run that configuration again. 3%  3%  [ 1 ]
It was fun. I would want to run there at least some of the time for future events. 37%  37%  [ 14 ]
I liked it, but I'd sure rather run the big loop we usually run! 24%  24%  [ 9 ]
I'm bored with the big loop and didn't like the GK course. Let's do something else. 5%  5%  [ 2 ]

Yeah, I don't expect to see anything but tail lights for a long time to come. Good thing that 405 HP monster isn't in my class. Graham, if you don't take FTStock with that car, I'm going to confiscate it from you.

Now I have to design a Miata course in June, so I can beat him and then do a quick calculation on how my $2500 ricer beat his $50K car, and if I can't beat him straight up - there is always PAX    :D  :nana: :poke:

Kevin,
We can't swap with you because of Rob's schedule. But neither of us have a problem with using the GK area if most people would like to run it again. If you have some ideas already on what you were looking to do in the GK area let's talk at Greenville. You know I don't want a short or slow course.

While Rob is busting my chops about a 20sec course with 10ft gates trying to break my car, he's doing just that. He likes fun courses too. Just remember the last Sanford event.

Miles,
Sure put pressure on me to get FTStock. I already don't have enough skills to drive a 300hp car so the added hp is just going to increase the oh shit factor, not decrease my time...

Kevin, Todd,
Thanks. Yeah I upgraded. Here's a few pics I took with a cheap digital camera. I'm picking up the car this Sunday after we get back from Floriduh. 02 QuickSilver Z06 w/13K miles. Sat in a garage way too long. I'm going to resolve that little problem :)

Congratulations Graham, very nice car. It'll be interesting to see your first run...going from an automatic tranny to a Z06 6spd. :) Enjoy!

Hmmm... I must be missing the humor on this one. Who's Pedro?
Although I have several offers from names that I am familiar with...
Including one person who said he needed a RWD car with >.820 PAX :)

Unfortunately I can't do 2nd set of wheels and R-comps this year so I'll be tearing up the stock tires. I think there is enough rubber on them to get through the season... not sure about having a co-driver though.

Yes it'll be entertaining. I'm used to an auto and left foot braking most everywhere. I tried left foot braking the Z06 and it is very akward. Then the shifting part. It's been a long time since I've had to shift. Fortunately with autox it is pretty much short shift 1-2 off the line and leave it there in a V8.

What I really need to learn is heel-toe shifting for my next adventure

That was at the Shell station too. Did you try any Blenheim ginger ale?

Thanks for the wake-up call David. Been out in the sun and consuming too much Vodka apparently. I better slow down now, vacation is almost over...

I met the owner at South of the Border. The car is from South Carolina.

Yeah right at the Shell station. Never heard of the stuff. I have to go down to SC on Sunday to get the Z. Do you want me to pick some up for you?

Naah, I'll be down there in two weeks. But make sure that you get some of the Blenheim Hot ginger ale with the pink top. Don't chug it, but it'll be a refreshing change that'll make you say "Hot damn!". You'll never ever have Canada Dry again.

Ok, so to get back on topic and discuss the GK area some more.

If you haven't voted please do so.

If you haven't read Miles post on course design in that area let me summarize it down to my take on it. It has to run in the direction we ran the T&T. The 1st half of the course is very limited due too bad concrete and not touching the GK station. So the flexability really only starts out at the main runway. By that point your pretty low on cones unless you use the minimalist approach in the 1st half or start a little further in. Which is doable.

The areas that need concrete work at the site. Miles, Pres, and VPs correct me if I am wrong on this. There is far less work to be done to do needed patching around the main loop. And it needs to be done regardless of the GK area. There are some serious sections (not holes) that need work in the GK area to open it up and improve safety.

The Golden Knights have the option to take our dates at anytime, right up to the day before. It is their area. So event chairs would need to design 2 courses. Plan A for the GK area and Plan B for the loop. Miles and I went through this very situation last October. Still doable, but more work.

Weeks before an event Miles and I found that it was best to go down and weed whack and sweep. We would have to do both areas just incase we got bumped out of the GK area. This is not a job for a couple of people. A crew of about 10 people are really needed so it isn't hell for a couple of people. Maybe renting a sweeper would help a lot for site prep here.

Scott had mentioned that during the next "patching day" that we also spread weed killer in the cracks of the areas we want to use. I think that might go a long way to reducing pre-event cleanup and improving the site for our needs. The site owners sure won't complain about reduced weeds and improved concrete :)

Rob and I are open to either area for June. But members need to be willing to put some skin into the game if we are to explore this area more and maintain the existing loop.

Graham

Graham, the only reason we were low on cones is because we had already set up three course elements on the far end of the site. You won't have that problem at the GK area for a normal points event. In fact, the GK course is still going to be shorter than the full big loop at LBG. The rest of your summary is pretty much on target.

I would like to say that if the airport promises us the site, the chances that we would have to move it are slim. I say that, and yet they did change their story on us quite a bit the very first time we tried to use it. So... yeah, technically, as much as I hate to admit it, the event chairs would need a back up plan if they plan to use the GK area. I think they 've worked out some things though and we are less likely to get jerked around the next time.. maybe? :whoknows:

Maybe that becomes the default place to run schools and Test and Tune events.... which are lower pressure and not quite such a disaster if things don't work out so well due to a last minute change in course design.

FYI, I mowed all the grass on the main runway that we use as part of the big loop. I think in so doing, I have uncovered some possible new paths for courses that are on the side of the runway farthest from the taxiways. So.. if the runway is swept (renting a sweeper is a great idea) some new possibilities might work out for paths around holes.

Miles

Honestly, I was not that impressed with the T&T course. It was fine for its purpose...blowing up transmissions :)

You could not run that course for a real event. Three things:
1) Pits - there is not enugh room. Look at the space we needed for pits at the last event

2) Grid - We used almost all the taxiway for grid and start. There is a difference between grid for 10 cars and 50 cars :)

3) Safety - The taxiway portion by the building, post and trees would never pass safety for a real event. At least not the way it was set up.

Actually, we may need more cones, as my Miata side of the course will be a cone-intensive tight Z06 busting course which will use every cone in the bus and as many as I can steal from the US1 construction zone.

I just can't resist, :deadhorse: at least until Graham gets his new car and I have to constantly wipe the drool from my lips
