I'm really impressed with my little point-and-shoot Sony DSC-W1. I recorded a few runs with the camera on video mode with it attached to the camera mount on the rollbar.

This is my last run at 40.3 seconds. Unfortunately it picks up more wind noise than engine sound, but the picture is remarkably clear for a mid-range digital camera. 16 MB.

Just thought I'd share. Enjoy!

Nice run. This should be required watching for all novices and people like me that need to turn early.

Novices, (and others :) ) watch this and count how many times Mike's hands were not moving...1001...1002.............. Look at how early he is turning in the lane changes, offsets and slaloms. This is what we aim to do.

Mike,

I had no idea that a digital camera in movie mode could do what that did. Wow.

Rob,

What do you mean by "turn early"?

Thanks,

Dick

Thanks Mike. This will be a good pre-race weekend learning tool.

It was what I had been trying to impart to the novices I rode with. (and to myself) :banghead: Mike was turning for the next lane change, or next element while he was still in the one before it. Most novices (and usually I am not terribly much better) :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: get to the last cone of the lane change, or the cone they are turning around at the slalom and then turn. Mike's video illustrates so much better what I am saying and by hitting the play button over and over again it is repeatable.

I agree. An excellent training video. Look ahead, fast hands, turning sooner than most people think to turn, braking early, getting behind that 1st slalom cone, and not being late.

I've gotten a couple of rides with Mike last year. He does this repeatedly, not just once in a while for the camera. It was an eye opener.

For those who learn by bad example I present the following.

Actually let me say this again: If you learn by watching others mistakes, use the following links.

http://homepage.mac.com/dspratte/iMovieTheater7.html
or download from here
http://homepage.mac.com/dspratte/FileSharing5.html

I see two big hitches in this run. Which (embarassingly enough) is actually my fastest of the day.

First, I got off line exiting the pivot cone and lifted while I sorted it out. That was dumb. That's what happens when you're looking no further ahead than the tip of your nose.

I think I paid for that until I was through the first two elements in the lane change.

There's a lot of little stuff in between (too out of shape on my approach to the three cone slalom of death) but I think the next big ticket item was going to hot into the finish-the final right.

Meh.

Holy Crap! Watching you enter the lane changes..you were turning in earlier than Mike.

I'm going to have to mount my camera and grab some movies. Great learning aid. I'm glad you guys posted.

*cough*Miles/Dick*cough*giveitup*cough :)

He "may" have been turning in too early since Mike was obviously turning at the "right" time.

Give up what? If you mean the video's, Miles (who is out of town) has them. FYI I have never ever seen in car videos of my runs . . . in 3 decades. I will probably get to see the ones Miles has been recording soon. I have used "outside of the car" movies (my autocrossing predates consumer video cams) and video to good effect. It can show where you are placing the car relative to the cones and can show what the car is doing. With the movies many years ago I actually played them in reverse to see how the rear of the car (Stock Datsun 260Z) was "moving" around apex cones.
