When I first started Autocrossing in the late 80’s with the Southern WV Region (SWVR) of SCCA we used to have two “autocrosses” at this place…

It is owned by Henry Payne (Payne Engineering). He had the skid pad (should be easy to see) with a short “road course) that runs right through the middle of the skid pad. On the back half of the road course there was a 1/4 mile section that ran up the hollow and at the end turned into a hill climb with a number of switchbacks. It finished up near the start of the road course section. You can see the 1/4 drag at the top, but the hill climb is hard to see. I believe Henry is still active in Vintage racing and has a nice stable of cars (Porsche 904, 907, 908 and 910). With the two events, we had one that ran the road course. If I remember correctly there was one car on track at a time and we did two flying laps. It was probably closer to a TT than Autocross, but we ran it as a Solo II event. The other event was the hill climb (with the 1/4 mile run included).
I was just a kid out of high school at that point and was borrowing drives in other people’s car (Renault Encore YUCK!) and eventually autocrossing a significantly under prepared Porsche 914. I wasn’t worldly enough yet to realize that you just didn’t see people bringing something like a Porsche 904 to an autocross on a regular basis. I just didn’t understand the entire “coolness” factor that existed then until I had moved away and it was all over. I don’t keep in touch with anyone from SWVR, and from looking on their website, they don’t list events at Payne Engineering anymore.
