i have read the new rules and i'm still not sure about the specs for tires in the stock class. i'm guessing Hoosier competion tires are not allowed in the stock class. but Michelin has Pilots in various configurations including competion level. these tires appear to be street legal so are they legal for stock class competion? thanks.

The rules for tire legallity in stock class are pretty much that the tire must be DOT rated and must be available to the general public and produced in enough sizes that almost everyone can use them.

Hoosier makes DOT rated race tires which are legal for stock class. Kumho, Avon and a few other manufacturers also make R-compound DOT legal race tires.

Since your asking this question I'm assuming your pretty new to the sport. I'd advise coming to an event or two and talking with the folks there. They can point you in the right direction as far as tires goes.

So does this mean you now have enough miles on the new C5 to bring it out for autox?

Chris O. needs company in SS so come on down. Just run your street tires for now. I assume you have the GY F1s on it? They'll be fine to get started.

Basically you need to use your stock rims (size) and put whatever DOT street legal tires on them that will fit in stock class. If you want some ideas on what type I can help you out if you tell me whether you're going to go dedicated wheels/tires for autox? Will you drive to events on them or trailer them?

You can find some used wagon wheels for it pretty cheap if you look around. Check out the Corvette Forum and look around.

Graham

thanks for the input everybody. no the C5 isn't going into competition. i picked up a late model 328is which if i am correct will put me in "D" class stock. i will probably trailer it, so now that i am clearer on tires allowed, i have a decision to make. i am leaning toward Michelin Pilots but i am thinking i may want to stick to their street tire at first to get more wear and have the ability to drive around town to get used to the car. the r tires would be nice but realistically i don't expect to be all that competitive in my first season and the car needs new tires no matter what.

the C-5 is still a weekend driver. of course my wife thought it was hilarious when she walked out to the garage to find our two dogs standing on the roof of the vette. somehow i have a hard time sharing the sentiment, but at this rate i may be autoXing it sooner than expected. are dog ears hanging from the rearview mirror allowed in the SS class?

My neighbors cat used to think the hood of my vette was an awesome couch. it would even sneak into the garage and spread out on that long hood. let's just say kitty now understands that it should hang out on its owners cars...

The dog ears would be legal as long as they are considered ornaments. You can't rig them up to act as spoilers to improve performance :idea2:

No pressure Steve, but if you do choose to run in "D" stock you might want to know that we currently have a gentleman's agreement to run on street tires for this year.

Should be STS legal also - no LSD on 96+ non-M E36, AFAIK.

Is that agreement still on? I kinda hope that it i$. Not to get sidetracked, but has anyone decided whether or not the Pro class will be abolished (if so I'm running for cover  )?

Classing updates will be in the Heel and Toe, also announced at the meeting etc. I suppose we could even put them here :)

Pro class will be around at least one more year.

Edit: Actually Pro is dead, it's now "X" class.

What happens when a competitor wants to compete at a higher level that will require r-compound tires?

For the past several years that hasn't been an issue. At this point I would venture a guess that the bridge hasn't been reached, and until it is there is not need to cross it.

Perhaps if a competitor showed up for 1 event or what have you on R-compound tires, then they could do something like enter the PRO class (providing it's still there) or run as exhibition?

Do we have an exhibition class for guests or folks otherwise not classed properly for the "I'm only going to be here 1 event ever and I'd rather not mess up your local points battle" types of situations? :)

Yep, it's called "PRO" - and if we can't beat the visitors, too bad for us...
