No way in Hell. The Mini (can't remember which one) with the most annoying sound EVER coming from its tires EVERY TIME THE FRONT TIRES WEREN'T COMPLETELY STRAIGHT would've won that one. I actually thought about paying him to stop running! Somebody said it was because he was driving on the stock run-flats.

That's the S/C Mini I drove. He did have the stock run-flats and they had NO grip. I didn't see him run, but saw Brian several times. So technically with what I saw Brian would have won. Either way between the two of them there was muchos tire squeal.

It was the most horrible tire squeal I've ever heard. It actually wasn't a squeal, it was more like a contiuous squawk/groan/squeal - actually, it isn't really describable, you just have to hear it.

Oh - have you ever heard the short squawk that drag slicks make when launched? Well multiply the volume by 500,000 and extend it by 50 seconds with brief periods of lower volume.

Vincent, what are you trying to say? ;)

I have to say that Saturday wasn't among my better days. Picked up a nail in the left front (good catch Art) and destroyed two basically new front shocks on the CRX.

Ryan, don't give up on the CRX. Whitney showed us this weekend that for minimal investment they can be made into a seriously fast autocrosser. And that was with no front shocks during the afternoon.

Ran the car too low, with not enough spring rate, at a bumpy site. I know the site wasn't bumpy as autocross sites go, but compared to an actual racetrack, it's bumpy.

Shock then bottomed out violently and repeatedly against hard urethane bumpstop, destroying it, and leaving the bottom of the shock mechanism to crash into the end of the shock body...destroying it.

The guys like Shenefield running STS Civics with 3 degrees negative camber (we were at 2.5) simply by lowering the car, I don't understand how they do that without tearing up equipment.

Must be. But at the same time, Oscar's been running CRXs that low with standard length shocks for years with no ill effects...

What rates were you running Rice?

The Konis are made for the stock Civic, so when you lower the front, you can have problems bottoming the shock. Neuspeed makes a Neuspeed/Koni with a 50mm shorter shaft, which doesn't keep the car from bottoming, but it does keep the springs from slapping around at full droop (when the car is off the ground) and it can protect the valving at the bottom of the shocks under severe circumstances (like when you lower the car too much). :)

I aint giving up, I am just thinking out loud. I know its gonna be a hoot when I finally get it running. I just need to get the damn thing running so I will enjoy it. I am tired of staring at this pile of new parts.

So, does this mean I finally got FTD/FSP? :)

Man, I was SO disappointed in my skill and intelligence level in figuring out that last 'Chicago Box' into the finish. I never figured it out on my own. :( Instead, after watching people at the end of the day swing wide to give themselves the room needed to make the gate did I finally understand my problem. I was just trying to attack it at too narrow of an angle. :(

Well, at least I finally ran a faster time. Still, I am just upset I could not mentally put that all together, and do it smooth and right. I just got flustered, made the SAME mistakes over and over, and kept trying to put a Subaru Peg into a narrow gate.

Hmm... I guess having RE070s without an alignement isnt a good idea. I have noticed they were very loud the first time I autoXed them, but I just decided to ignore it :)

I still have to concur that I though the mini was MUCH louder. At least you got to see burnouts with mine ;). I hope my screeching wasn't "most horrible tire squeal" ever. I try :|

It was a great event, and I hope I can just put together what I have learned this year, get a few tweaks into the STi in the off-season, and come back a lil' less squealing and a little faster and better prepared.

Thanks for the great event, and hopefully I can keep learning lessons from the faster and more experienced people that are in this club.

Thanks guys!

- brian

I've NEVER laughed so hard in all my life at an AX! My runs in the AM with the 4 yr old Bridgestones on the Miata blown up to 40# made the car grip like it was on ice!!! There was no control over where the car was going as soon as the throttle got above idle. Lowering the pressures to 30# adjusting the rear shocks and the increased grip as the oil and water was cleaned off in the afternoon made the car mamagable but then I clipped cones on every run. Unfortunately Donna and I started to feel sicker by the minute in the PM so we left without doing any fun runs. I just wish we could have gotten some stickier tires to use. It was a great "run for the fun of it" venue, but I would not be in favor of using it for a points event unless you gave everyone in the first run group an extra set of runs to clean off the oil and grease. The close proximity of fences and building would make it difficult to design a challenging course that would be safe for everyone to run, ESPECIALLY the novices in the first run group. Sorry, not trying to be a wet blanket, but that's the way I see it.
